Cowl induction SMOG

Posting some information regarding the cold air intakes for the Xjs. The rules are bit confusing at times, but here they are.

87 - 90 4.0L has a heat stove, a heat tube, and a thermostatically controlled air filter box. Only CARB approved parts may replace this air cleaner set-up.

91 - 95 have no restrictions on cold air intakes as long as ALL the original smog control hoses are present and installed in the correct manner. (This rule applies to all pre-95 vehicle without a thermostatically controlled air cleaner set-up.)

96 - 01 (All OBDII vehicles) must have CARB approved parts installed.

Starting this year, the state is really cracking down on techs for not doing smogs correctly. One of their new tricks is the state is running bait cars through the smog shops with aftermarket parts installed and phoney CARB approval stickers attached. Several guys have been nailed by this car and the word is out. Just because the sticker is there doesn't mean it is for that vehicle. A good smog tech will run the number on the CARB exemption sticker to double check that the number and the vehicle match.

Thanks for the very good info. I may just do what Sean did and retain the stock box but it would be great to get it out of there and put a compressor.

Yeah, I really like my setup. It works great. True cold air.

What about using a buick air box and running it through the fire wall it has a real filter .I have no pic's but in my 95 I just bolted the buick box to my over flow tank and punched a 3 inch hole in the fire wall looks good works good no water damage .But where I live in NWC we dont have smog

Bryan,

How is SMOG legal in CA then? No heat stove, no heat tube, and no thermostatically controlled air filter box. :dunno:

Because they went through the hassle of getting a CARB approval. If the kit is approved, and the kit says to remove the heat stove then all is good with the smog guys.

Roger that.

I would really like to keep one of my Jeeps smog legal. I am tempted to do this kit.

They paid for CARB cert. It's not about pollution, it's about buying the CARB license.
Isn't the state out of Fing money?? This kind of crap is so annoying & such a waste of resources. Shut CARB down & repurpose the employees to other jobs like eliminating illegal contractors or chasing down unemployment fraud.
I just got my 92 smogged with the K&N kit. From T-body to cone filter where box used to be.

Apparently you didn't live in this state during the 70s and 80s. Talk about getting choked out everytime you got on the freeway. The majority of the pollution controls now used worldwide were pioneered to stay within the strict emission standars of California. As the population grew it was pretty obvious we needed cleaner cars to drive.

Even though it is a big pain in the ass, I would rather keep the smog program and CARB. If left unchecked, the average person is too cheap or too lazy to repair their vehicle. Unfotunately we all get lumped into the program and we have to deal with it. I say we are ALL better off becuase they are here. Like it or not, when buying performance parts I wouldn't even think about buying a non-approved part for my vehicle, and I will be damn sure I keep the EOD stickers and my receipts handy for my next smog check.

So your saying if you were me you would retain the stock box and just seal it and tap into the cowl.

I am starting to lean this way so I don't have to deal with any extra work. I can find another place for the compressor.

Im thinking he means the actual intake changing, not emissions as a whole. On any modern vehicle an intake, whether CARB approved or not, would still pass the sniffer test all the same as stock/CARB approved.

Get it smogged, then swap it and register it in a Co. that only requires SMOG upon change of ownership.

I have to completely agree with this... what you saw coming down from the Grapevine in 1975 you now only see in 3rd world countries. I wonder how many died of cancer from that era?

So maybe a dumb question but does the muffler matter? My stock setup passes even though there are holes in the muffler from corrosion. I want to replace it but can find anything on CA SMOG concerning mufflers.

I imagine it should not matter because the CAT does all the downstream cleanup work.

muffler doesnt affect smog and nothing back from the cat needs to be CARB approved, just needs to meet sound requirements. For passing smog though, they are not supposed to pass it if there are exhaust leaks

That would have required them to look under the jeep. They are small holes but none the less I was surprised they have not flagged the muffler.

yeah, to be honest it really shouldnt modify the exhaust detection anyway since the holes arent big enough to let air in, just exhaust out. I think what its meant to protect is artificially injecting clean air to the exhaust, helping a failing car pass
