Cowl induction SMOG

For passing smog though, they are not supposed to pass it if there are exhaust leaks

Not true. Exhaust leaks are not a reason to fail a smog test. However, if there are enough leaks in the exhaust that fresh dilutes the exhaust stream too much the smog machine will not allow the test to run.

Holes after the cat are OK. Holes before the cat will cause you to fail emissions, but not fail the visual portion of the test.

Well, in an effort to keep my MJ smog legal and give me the room I need for my coil overs, I made the purchase of the Spectre from Jegs

http://www.jegs.com/webapp/wcs/stor...nar=0&Ne=1+2+3+13+1147708&searchTerm=865-9945

It was $199.99 plus $12 for shipping. I should get it on Friday and will install it over the weekend and will provide some pics. :photo:

i've never seen that before but it looks rad. Is the filter in the expanded part of the middle of the tube?

I wonder how often I will have to clean that filter as it seems a little small.

yeah it sure does look tiny. if it were approved for my year I would consider buying it, leaving that filter out, and modifying it to fit a bigger one under the cowl. smog techs would never know

If they get that CARB approved, I just may consider ditching my FIPK...

Got it in today

Seemed to be made well.

This gives me some work to do this weekend :eeks1:

Search Paulairhart user name, he got one of those spectre kits for free for letting them use his XJ to engineer the whole thing... Then sold me his FIPK, he told me he likes it better then the FIPK, and the room you gain under the hood is crazy. He's got a write up floating around here somewhere just search his user name or send him a PM with questions if you have any... They also used his classic chevy to make kit for that year/model

Well, I got it installed. I am not very impressed with it though plus it looks pretty lastara being all chrome and all. I guess it is only fitting....

I had to modify it because the location it wanted me to mount it to the firewall was too far over to the driver’s side and the factory wiring harness was totally in the way. Their [crappy] instructions stated to 'lower the wiring a little bit' which was impossible. I am assuming they installed this once or twice and the thought it was 'ok'. I think there is some variance as to where the factory wiring harness bracket is located on the firewall through the years. I ended up drilling out the OEM rivets and welding it over to the right of the air intake. I also had to cut off a corner of the portion that bolts to the throttle body because it interfered with the throttle as well :exclamati Not well designed at all. It was missing three things that said it should have been included and had to go to the store to get the 12" hose it said was included (they sent me a 4" piece :exclamati )

The fact that I have to remove my air intake to add oil is uber lastara as well. All in all it gave me the smogability and the space I needed. Just wish it wasn't so lame......

I am going to call them tomorrow and give them a piece of my mind. :gee:

Ok now there's some ambiguity... you say yes then have sarcasm? Meaning you feel like it robbed power?

no difference what so ever.

ok, good to know...and sorry to hear. Just wanted to have it clarified for everyone as i didn't see you post anything about power results.

I bet there would be a increase over that thing by leaving the filter out and modding it so you can put a filter in the cowl. If I were to buy an intake like that in the interest of staying smog "legal", pretty sure I would mod it like that. That tiny filter is not nice looking
