Cowl induction SMOG

I bet there would be a increase over that thing by leaving the filter out and modding it so you can put a filter in the cowl. If I were to buy an intake like that in the interest of staying smog "legal", pretty sure I would mod it like that. That tiny filter is not nice looking

I could care less about the power at this point (I have a stroker). Smogability and space were my main concerns.

pauls is supposed to be designed for the 96-01 crowd and crackers is for the 87-90 crowd. as far as I know it still should/could go to the same spot though

Cracker, Why does yours look different then Pauls?

What hooper said.

The Renix ones go to the drivers side.

If you are in the pasadena area you can check it out.

Yea I don't see why the one for the earlier models wouldnt work on his... That over the oil fill is pretty retarded!

Are you running an HO TB?

I'm moving to CA next month and need to get my 87 smog-able.

If they check the CARB numbers that means I need to get a renix one and adapt it to my HO tb right?
I think this is the only air cleaner that will work with my shockhoops/brace.

I have a bored out Renix TB.

There are HO CAI that are smog legal in CA. I just sold my old Rock-It Parts tube.

My buddy had this issue with coilovers/engine cage and a hoop up front in his exploder. A shop in dixon was ok with him bolting up a stock airbox and leave it sticking out of the hood. He just installed it when he got to the shop in the parking lot. Passed fine, i'm not sure how many other shops are ok with this but that's a possible angle for you if you can schmooze...

Sweet do they have their own race class. Failspeed? :)

I'm pretty sure any shop that let's you swap stuff in for a smog check won't be around for very long.

That's a whole lot of money to spend on something that requires a fairly extensive modification. I mean, without the online filter, its basically $200 for some chrome tubing and a sticker, right?

I'm disappointed by Cracker's feedback. I just had to smog mine and had to swap out my home-made, hot air cone filter for the stock air box (even though it barely fits anymore and I can't even bolt it down). I really want to do the cool thing but I was hoping for a permanent solution regarding the smog.

Thanks to everyone, especially BC, for the great info.

Apparently you didn't live in this state during the 70s and 80s. Talk about getting choked out everytime you got on the freeway. The majority of the pollution controls now used worldwide were pioneered to stay within the strict emission standars of California. As the population grew it was pretty obvious we needed cleaner cars to drive.

Even though it is a big pain in the ass, I would rather keep the smog program and CARB.

Why have equipment limitations. If it passes the sniffer then it should meet the requirements. Having a more efficient engine isn't going to cause smog.

Define more efficient?

If a company can show that their product does not effect the emissions coming from the tailpipe, it gets a CARB approval. Pretty simple deal, just some red tape to go through.

Yeah. Just some red tape, and a nice ammount of money that CARB wants to test your product. How many extra products must you now sell to make it worth selling it in California? Would your small market (maybe a couple thousand at the most) of people looking for your product even offset the costs of getting it tested?

I personally tried to get my Mustang smogged with a Anderson Ford Motorsports Powerpipe on my Procharger and they failed it for illegal modifications. I took it home and swapped back on the Procharger intake and took it back for a test. My emissions increased by 75% across the board, but now it passed. Sounds like another of California's failures of government. All that shoud matter is tailpipe emissions.
