Coordination of trails for Moab

I'm glad this site is up and running now.
I am the fortunate person to try and put together a schedule of runs for this years Fall Fling. I have an idea to get it going and would like everyones help.
I would like all those that are planning on going and have been there before that are familiar with the trails to volunteer to lead one or more trails during the week. If you have a specific trail that you enjoy and would be willing to lead on a particular day, please post it here and I'll start keeping tabs of who, which trail and what day they would like to do the trail. There are 3 trail designations.
EASY
MODERATE
DIFFICULT
Once it gets closer to the event, I will post the list and schedule and fill in where there are holes in the schedule to make a complete run list. I will thank those in advance that volunteer to put on what I consider the best event around.
If you have any questions feel free to either email me or post them here. If your not sure about a trail, just ask. I've been on almost all the trails and if I haven't then I'll find someone who has.
Thanks
GRNT

I'll lead one or more of the MOD/HARD trails. I'll even be there for the whole event this time.

What do you think of doing Rusty Nail/Golden Spike again on Fri or Sat? I'd like to run that again, maybe even instead of doing Pritchett Canyon. I also would like to run Cliffhanger this year, so I hope it will be run on Friday or Saturday. If a few folks wanted to run Cliffhanger on Sun, and we ran Rusty Nail on Saturday, I'd consider leading a Pritchett Canyon run on Friday. I wouldn't want to run Pritchett on Sat because of the bike race.

I'll be there Wednesday, and will run trails Thursday thru Sunday.

Hey Mil, what's the deal? You post about trails in Moab and get us all excited, and then you jump on your motorcycle with your pretty wife and drive off into the sunset for a week.

I hope you're home safe and had a great time. :D

Trails

Christy and I just got back today. Sunday. We had a great trip. spent half the week up above San Francisco, riding the coast and all the back roads. What a great place to ride. put over 1K on the bike in 4 days. Then we went down to Hollister for the big bike run. Lots of Bikes. They figured between 50-70K in town and the area. Then we rode the area and just relaxed. Great time and a nice break from the rat race.

I plan on being In Moab from the Saturday to Saturday, so I will plan runs starting Tuesday on for the official dates and will lead some unofficials for those that want to tag along. I will probably be leaving on Saturday to get home but thought that I might lead a Moab Rim on Saturday early and that will give others the opportunity to run something on Saturday and still have enough time to get on the road for home.
I was thinking of doing Cliffhanger on Wednesday. I had the same thought on Pritchett. I don't plan on running it this year. I also thought that I'd like to do Rusty Nail and Gold spike trail. I am planning on leading one of each trail as far as difficulty goes. I will plan on leading the Tusher tunnel trail, which is an easy trail early in the week like Monday or Tuesday if there are enough people that want to do it. then Cliffhanger on Wednesday. Hells revenge on Thursday will need a trail leader. Rusty Nail on Friday(thanks for volunteering to lead that one). We need someone to lead a behind the rocks run. what do you think of putting some alternates on Thursday for those that may not want to do Hells revenge or is Hells Revenge a mandatory for all participants day?
I've got a lot of thoughts for the runs so there shouldn't be to much problem getting them filled with leaders and putting enough on to make it interesting. I'd like to throw in Metal Masher this year but will need someone to lead it. Jeff You hear me here buddy?
I will post the various runs that are available soon and people can start picking on the ones that they want to help out on. I want to set up a team for each run so that the leader can keep the group moving if there are any problems on the trails. It really worked out well when Grant and Mark took over the duties of getting the two disabled cars off of Cliff hanger last year. They went beyond the call of duty and that was all volunteer, I did not ask them to do it, but it made me think that these type of people should be present in the group that would be willing to help out in this way. What do you think?
Anyone else with their thoughts on how the runs should be set up, I'm open for opinions.
Later.
Mil

Guess I'm getting lazy, since my first inclination is to just be a member of the pack for a change, but, if you want to add Gold Bar Rim as a moderate run I could lead that - gotta love that view at the end! Depending on how adventurous the group is, and if we end up with a winch or two, we could take that a bit further up to the Crack from the north side. Only Body Snatcher and the Golden Steps need to be dealt with, since Double Whammy has a bypass. And, by the end of the week, I'll be winding down again, so would be willing to lead the scenic Shaffer Trail - Musselman Arch run again (or maybe try Fisher Towers area). Want to do Cliffhanger again (missed it last year), but only in the middle!

Also, I should be at SlickRock the Friday before for some pre-event playing. Last couple of years Danno and I have headed down to the Needles area on Monday, but maybe this year we could vary it by doing the long, long, all day Lockhart Basin (via Hurrah Pass and Chicken Corners) as a combo scenic/moderately difficult (in spots) run on Sunday?

I'll really be up for this stuff again, especially since my CO plans seem to be on life-support!

I'm going to sell my XJ if I miss Moab again this year

On the Rusty nail side of things...have you thought about sending one group up Rusty Nail and another up Poison Spider Mesa to meet at the Golden Crack? If you are looking for something new this year...why cut off all the fun stuff from PSM up to the crack? Quite a few of the classic Moab obstacles are on this section, and if you haven't run the entire Spike it's a must do. A 31" shod XJ with a locker or even a limited slip can make this run. Those folks who have become bored with anything that isn't pure extreme obstacle for the entire length of the trail can take Rusty Nail, and the rest of us can bask in the glory of 17 miles of some of the best trail on the planet.

Unless I am selling my XJ come October, I'd be more than happy to lead that run. We'll just have to leave 90 minutes or so before the Rusty Nail group if there's a plan to meet in the middle.

We ran one group on Gold Bar rim and another on Rusty Nail two years ago. We'll probably have a few more folks this year, so maybe doing three groups this year would work.....PSM, Rusty Nail and Gold Bar Rim. This should work on Friday, other than getting everyone back in time for dinner. We'd need a couple of trail crew volunteers to bring in any stragglers, and not those involved with the Fri evening program. Mil, I'd volunteer to lead Pritchett if we did it, but I don't know if I remember enough about Rusty Nail/Golden Spike to lead that one. We ran Behind the Rocks last year, and I won't ever run that one again, especially on Fri or Sat of this particular weekend. It was way too far between the obstacles, with marginal scenery, and the mountain bikes were all over the trail.

It's up to you guys if you want to run everyone on Hell's Revenge on Thursday. It's always fun, and it's been nice to have everyone together on one trail for a day. We would need to move things along better than we did last year if it's a bigger group, but we could move part of the group ahead while others played on Hell's Gate, and end up with two groups. That way one group could be done with Tip Over Challenge before the other group got there, we had too big a bottleneck there last year, and some could go around to Rubble Trouble if they wanted. I think it could work to start everyone together and then split into two groups at Hell's Revenge, what do you think? Since we've run it the last two years, maybe some would want to run something else that day......any opinions?

I want to run Cliffhanger this year, but it looks like you guys are going to make me get there on Tues. :) Maybe you can find someone to lead it on Saturday....I would but I don't know where it is.

Hells Revenge on Friday

I'd like to get opinions on running Hell's Revenge on Friday.
This would free up Thursday for more runs that can be longer.
We should be able to get off the trail on Friday in plenty of time to make dinner.
Richard, I didn't read your last message well enough. It looks like ciffhanger will be one of the popular runs this year. we could get that out on Thursday instead and I can set up something else on Wendsday. It's an easy run to figure out there's no turns on it at all in case a Saturday run would be better.
Nay, Thanks for the volunteer on PSM and GS. What would be your days that you will be there? The last few years we've been running into Golden Spike and the crack backwards because it takes alot less time and you can get the same obstacles with out the long day on GS. But if there are enough people that want to do a long day and do both PSM and GS that would be fine.
I'm also thinking of 2 moderates per day to break up the groups a little. Make it easier on the leaders alittle and get more areas in for runs. Opinions?
Mil

IRRC, last year we ran PSM and Gold Bar Rim on the same day. May I suggest we run these on separate days if possible? Pretty please? Gold Bar is an easy trail, but fun nonetheless, and I'm hoping to run both of these this year. Thanks.

Tom

Probably Fri or Sat for me on PSM/GS. I doubt I'd be there before then. Just keep me in mind if you want to set it up and I'll keep you posted on my schedule. If we do Golden Spike, I'd want somebody else who has run the trail on my run. I enjoy leading, but I've only been through it once and having somebody to consult with on route selection when the trail gets dusty would be nice. That and the ole GPS.

I'd also lead just a moderate run up PSM. Still my favorite trail in the world even if you *can* get a stocker up there.

Nay

Well, I finally got my mods all done (8.5" long arm) and it looks like I'll be stuck on the moderate trails. I am in the process of corrupting my brother in law  (4" lift, open diffs) and I need to show him the ropes. I like the idea of running Hells Revenge on Friday and a longer trail like PS on Thursday. I would be willing to lead PS if necessary (Do I have to be a member?) I promise to pay my dues before October

I hope I'll be able to make it again this year, and maybe even run some trails with some of you, right now I'm still doing the unimployment thing, and should have something by then, so it will depend on the work schedule.

Can't wait

Man, I can't wait till Moab!! Anyhow, I have only been wheeling down there a couple of times, so probably not up to leading runs. But, I did run Lockhart Basin this spring and found it kind of cool for an easier run. Never hear this one mentioned so thought I would throw it out there. Is kinda far from town though on a washboardy road. I will be in Moab for Fall Fling from October 3rd till the 12th, so if I can assist with something, let me know. Am camping at Slickrock CG too.

I'll lead Rusty Nail on Sat. if we want to go that route. I think that Hell's Revenge on Fri. would be just fine. It would give the newer folks another day or 2 to get used to near vertical ascents and decents with full traction/control.

Moab Fall Fling Trails

Here is the list of trails that I have for the fall fling. If you have any other trails that you know of that you would like on the list, please let me know so I can add it to the list. I plan on making a schedule from the list. I will rate the trails and we will have 3 to 4 trails for each day.
I am thinking of having EASY,MODERATE,HARD AND VERY DIFFICULT.

EASY TRAILS.(scenic in nature)
Schaffer canyon/Dead Horse point
Tusher Tunnel
Gemini Bridges (on top and under the arch)
Arches National Park

MODERATE (scenic with some challenges for stock vehicles with minimum of lift and 30"+ tires)
Gold Bar Rim
Rose Garden Hill/Top of the World
Tusher Tunnel/Wipe Out hill
Poison Spider Mesa
Metal Masher ( doing the bypasses)
Hell's Revenge (without doing the difficult optional obstacles)

HARD (challenging with some scenic. 4"+lift with minimum 31" tires and some traction aided axle.
Poison Spider/Golden Spike/Gold Bar Rim
Metal Masher
Hell's Revenge (with difficult obstacles)
Kane Creek Trail
Cliff Hanger
Steel Bender/Flat Iron Mesa
Behind the Rocks

VERY DIFFICULT (minimum requirements, 4"+lift 32" tires, at least one locker, driver expierience on 4+ trails)
Rusty Nail/Golden Spike
Prichett Canyon
Proving Grounds
Moab Rim
Helldorado

If I have missed some please let me know. If you are interested in leading one or more of these runs please let me know what trail and what day you would like to run it.
Hell's Revenge will be run on Friday this year so that we will have time to make it back to the campground for the scheduled dinner.

If your not familier with any of these trails, do an internet search on any search engine and type in Moab Jeep Safari Trails. There are plenty of sites that explain the runs and some trail expieriences.

I would like to maybe have an all ladies driving run one of the days if there is enough interest. Let me hear from the ladies.

If you have any suggestions or you haven't volunteered yet for a run, now is the time to speak up.
I will probably finalize the run schedule by the end of August.

I'm willing to lead an "unofficial" run to the South on Monday if there are folks interested - either Lockhart Basin, or Elephant Hil l(Needles District) again to the Confluence if enough want to. I would rate both of these a Moderate (although I haven't actually done Lockhart - this is a FULL day deal by it's length - looks like good desert run though).

Also, with Hell's Revenge on Friday, we should move Shaffer/Dead Horse back to Thursday and I'd be willing to lead again.

Finally, we tend to overlook the area to the NE along 128 - how about something (Rose Garden Hil, Porcupine Rim - Moderate, or Fisher Towers, Top of the World - Easy) in that direction. Not everybody takes the time to go that way, and you know that the Colorado River (Castle) Valley along there is spectacular. I'd hesitate to just call this a "scenic" run, but they're not very difficult and there are great views. Trouble is, can't figure out when to do this.

We should consider coordinating the moderate Gold Bar Rim, with the "hard" PSM - Golden Spike - Gold Bar run. This would allow some of the more capable "moderates" to hook up with the "hard" group on the backside of the Crack and have a mini-version of the all NAXJA Hell's Revenge ride.

We really need a two week event!

Trails for Fall Fling

Helldorado will be added.

Mike, Your thoughts are apreciated. They are the same as mine. I will be planning a run on the Rose Garden and Top of the World for it's scenic value. We can run the creek bottom going in on the dirt road thru the red rock area to make it a little interesting. I will put the Monday and Tuesday as non official run days for those that will be there. I will be there early so there will be opportunity to try new trails or take those that are interested on others that we have been on before.
I will proably have you lead Schaffer on Thursday for the easy day, I will lead the Tusher/wipeout on Wendsday for the easy/moderate.

I do plan on coordinating the Gold bar/Rusty nail/golden spike run on the same day to make it so anyone that wants to venture into the difficult/moderate will be able to.
Thanks for the suggestions.
