Cleg tomorrow

Here is another email I've gotten on this subject, it is from Greg to me in response to me asking for clarification on a few facts

Haven't seen ya for awhile.X All of this information has been disseminated to your club NAXJA through the Adopt-a-Trail board and quarterly Adopt-a-Trail meetings.X I showed all of the Adopt-a-Trail Members the maps (that reflect the current conditions) for Cleghorn before any work on the ground occurred.
.
We held Open House sessions to review the maps which showed the closures for over a year.X These maps were on our SBNF website over a year.We took public comments and received not ONE appeal.
.
All of this was posted in the Los Angeles Times, Orange County Register, SB Co Sun, LA news channels etc.X Every possible media source we had legal access to was addressed.
.
This is very frustrating to me.X I was very disappointed in the absolute apathy shown by our local off roading community.Asleep at the wheel again???Yes

Karstic can you chime in please

OK so not to often do I take the time to write out/up a response to issues such as this one. However I feel strongly about this. In discussion with another NAXJA member (not forum user), I think what I said to that person said best. I feel that some of the newer/more recent NAXJA members/users (red/black letters) seem to forget that Cleghorn road always had public access, but the off shoot trails (bypasses) were always, and will for now be off limits. And the off road community (not pointing fingers at NAXJA, but every forum, and off road club that frequents Cleghorn) continues to run the off shot/bypasses (myself included), and we as a community want to cry about closure, but thats as far as we take it. Start getting pro active. Go to the adopt a trail meetings. Write letters to your Government, but the most important thing, stay legal on the trail, and show the public that were not a bunch of ass holes with 4x4s, and bad attitudes, but up standing, and strong contributors to our land, and community. If your not willing to do that the shut the *#*@ up.

Peace
Ted

Quoted for posterity

If the passion that is expressed on the forums was expressed in a proactive positive way we wouldn't have so much to complain about and the general public would have a much better opinon on our hobby

Bottom line here.

The offshoots from Cleghorn have ALWAYS BEEN ILLEGAL. Period.

.. Like it or not.

I am cleaning this thread up and closing it for 24 hours. When you kids cool down, you can have it back.

Don't mean to start up a controversy here but the last time I was up at Cleghorn, about 4 weeks ago, I asked a ranger who was riding by on his motorcycle what offshoots from Cleghorn were closed and what were open. I was told that the closed offshoots were obvious as they has piled rocks and brush at both ends. He said any offshoot that DID NOT have that was open. Just reporting what I was told by the ranger I spoke with. I did notice that there was alot of evidence that people were bypassing the rock piles and using the "closed" offshoots so maybe the forest service finally said screw it and shut them all down now. It's been a month since I've been there so...?:dunno:

They posted notice in the newspapers?

No wonder they got no response, nobody reads those things anymore :D

You can go to
http://www.fs.fed.us/r5/sanbernardino/recreation/ohv/index.shtml to get the latest Vehicle Use Maps. Unfortunately right now the site is under maintenance. sigh.

Just like driving through any state, its your responsibility to know the local laws as it is to know the current legal use of trails. If anyone here attended the SBNF AAT meetings in Corona as announced by karstic, then you would have received your own map. Greg from SBNF is a GREAT guy that heavily supports offroading and keeps our trails open. If it wasn't for him, you'd see MORE trails closed. if you don't know him, you do not have a leg to stand on when it comes to understanding what it takes to keep trails open.
