Three arrested in connection with slain Border Patrol Agent Robert Rosas
July 24, 6:48 PM

Whether it was illegal immigrants or drug smugglers is not immediately clear. What is certain is Border Agent Robert Wimer Rosas, was killed in the line of duty by unidentified individuals at 9:15 PM on July 23rd while on patrol.

A three-year veteran of the Border Patrol and working out of the Campo/Pine Valley Station here in the high desert of Southern CA, Agent Rosas was reportedly in pursuit of suspected illegal border crossers with two other agents. They were tracking a group within a hundred yards or so of the border when shots rang out. Agents found Rosas mortally wounded with gunshots to the body and head. FBI and DHS are conducting an investigation and have asked all non-essential personnel including citizen border watchers to stay clear of the area.

KPIX in San Francisco is reporting that two men and one woman were arrested in relation to this case in a San Jose Hospital where they were seeking treatment. Reportedly, a blood sample of one of the assailants was found at the scene. Reports that the Agent may have been shot with his own weapon are unconfirmed at this time.

This tragedy underscores the need for a better fence and tighter control over the United States Border with Mexico. It also signals an escalation of the violence on this side of the fence or lack thereof. The area where the agent was killed is still only protected by the decades old ten-foot fence that smugglers and illegal immigrants have been scaling or crawling under since it was installed.

Local residents and citizen border watchers are stricken with grief, many of whom knew and worked with Agent Rosas.

“This is a tragedy and our hearts go out to the Agents family and co-workers. It is a dangerous job made more so by shortages in manpower and a relatively open border despite reports to the contrary. The duty of our elected officials is on the line here, our local, state and federal government needs to step in and secure the borders of this country now. It is a shame on every elected official that they actually let this go so far. Our Border Patrol agents are some of Americas finest and hardest working agents in law enforcement and for this they get treated like second-rate citizens with little if any support from 95% of the politicians. Politicians have taken a sworn oath to protect and serve this country, it is time that they made good on that OATH ” Said Ken Dreger Director of The Homeland Security Policy Institute Group, sponsor of the Border Patrol Auxiliary.

Agent Rosas is survived by a wife and two small children. Flags across the area are flying at half-staff.

Its a damn shame.

This is why we need to up security at our borders and let them do their job without fear of repercussions...

My prayers for his family...

We need a few incidents of shoot first, ask questions later episodes. Or put up some towers with good military trained snipers with barrets to keep an eye on the agents, one every half mile, don't have to have shooters in all of them, just the towers. When a spot goes hot the shooter goes up and takes care of business, agent goes down so does anybody running from the scene.

I wonder how accurate that 40% decrease in illegals is that was reported on CNN this week or if it's just BS to get the heat off the Obama administration and officials who are up for re-election.

It woudln't surprise me if it's pretty accurate. I'm guessing the crappy ecconomy isn't just hurting the high paying job market. Hell I have friends who have been making close to 100K a year that can't find jobs delivering pizza right now and Utah is hurting less than most of the country.

Most of the illegals are just looking for work. Why come over if there isn't any?

How do you measure the amount of illegals?

Haven't the DHS almost completely stop their raids on businesses that hire illegals? There was that huge raid around Seattle, I think, and they busted a bunch of illegals. The news channels made a big stink about it, since Barry said he was going to stop that, and like a week later DHS released all the detainees and then gave them temporary work permits.

If they are basing the 40% drop off of the number of busts then that is probably a good number considering the number of raids are down.

Ain't gonna happen, not while the Border Patrol is practicing it's unofficial policy of abandoning any agent who dares to fire their gun-I've been told by several BP agents that if they fired their duty weapon the BP would not support them in court.

I read that and thought, Yea, didn't the last 2 BP agents who shot somebody on the southern border end up in the federal pen, and they gave the drug dealer who got shot a free pass to come and go as he pleased?

And then he got arrested for drug smuggling using that free pass....

"In El Paso, Texas, Osvaldo Aldrete-Davila is now behind bars serving a 57 consecutive month sentence on charges of smuggling a ton of marijuana into the United States. The ruling comes more than three years after Aldrete-Davila was given immunity to testify in the case against Border Patrol Agents Ignacio Ramos and Jose Compean. The agents were convicted of shooting Davila during his attempt to bring drugs into the U.S. and not reporting the incident."

They are out now, Bush pardoned them before he left office.

That has been policy on numerous borders at least since the late 1960's (when my experiences began). Nothing new. I did my first ride alongs in 1963 or 64 on the US Mexican border. You start shooting and invariably somebody will start shooting back.
What it should be and what it is are often radically different from common preconceptions. The old iron curtain in many spots was a double fence 15 feet tall, topped with razor wire, 50 meters apart, with mine fields, machine gun towers, dogs, walking and motor patrols. There were even Spensatz (Special forces) patrols out there and on our side Special Forces of at least four flavors patrolling. People still made it across nightly, going both directions.
The shooters are due for a stay on death row, if deported, a firing squad. Nobody wants this to turn into a shooting war, except maybe the radicals or instigators, then they can say I told you so.
You figure there are about 300 illegal crossings a night, plus or minus depending on the time of year and the phase of the moon.
Strategically the border has been slowly opening for decades, tactically it runs hot and cold. Conflicting agendas, depending on who is making the most noise at the moment.
An 18 foot wall that's what we need, then we can pass a law against 20 foot ladders. I have a twenty foot aluminum ladder, I can carry with one hand.

They snatched one of our troops out on patrol once. A couple of weeks later we snatched one of them, flash flares to blind them and tear gas. we had masks they didn't. Hard to be the bull of the woods when you can't see or breath. LOL
Often as not the fences weren't right on the border and nobody knew exactly where the border was. More often than not the border was where the guys with guns said it was.

On evening we did a foot patrol north of OP-India. Apparently, we crossed between 2 matchsticks without seeing them, because we came up on the border from the EAST side. OOPS! We came back in on the road, and nothing further was said.
Never, never trust a Lt with a map and a compass!

I'm not trying to nit pick here, but they weren't pardoned. Their sentences were commuted.

If they were pardoned it would have meant they were basically declared not guilty.

Sentence commuted means they were guilty, but released on time served.

Ok nit picker, JK, I couldn't remember which way he went with it. But since they live in EP, so do I, I remember seeing them all over the news when they got out.

Basically Bush screwed them by commuting, pardon would have been more in order there. Now they have a record.

Maybe, maybe not. I'm sure the agents would've liked to have been pardoned, but if they had the choice between commuting their sentence or staying in prison, I'm sure they'll take the commuting.
