Cash for clunkers

I wonder if the Government will in fact melt these vehicles down or turn them in to a pick n pull.. is there anything in the program that states what is actually done with them?

Has anybody bothered to look at the link I posted???????

What happens to the vehicle I trade in?

The CARS Act requires that the trade-in vehicle be crushed or shredded so that it will not be resold for use in the United States or elsewhere as an automobile. The entity crushing or shredding the vehicles in this manner will be allowed to sell some parts of the vehicle prior to crushing or shredding it,
but these parts cannot include the engine or the drive train.

Drivetrain = Engine, transmission, transfer case, and axles! More more D44's, 231's, 242's, AW4's, etc...

A lovely government program to destroy our beloved XJ's.:soapbox:

No I am not, just tempted. The reason would be reliability. ...

However, not worring about breakdowns, being stranded or wondering what is next certainly does have value...in the right situation.

That being said...it was just a thought for those who are getting fed up with keeping older cars running.

You nailed it. For those that drive lots of miles for work nothing beats reliability and good mpg. Glad I got in on it. I have a spare xj and mj to play with but will likely sell the mj soon just to clean up the driveway. Nothing wrong with older cars but when things start to fail you don't want to be driving them 100s of miles a day!

Be that as it may.

The gov't is encouraging people to get out of slightly older, paid off cars, and into vehicles that they likely cannot afford (have to finance).

Sound familiar? This is what crashed the housing market.

I'm not saying anything is wrong with financing a car (hell I'm doing it myself) but if you can afford a new car you'd be buying one regardless of some stupid gov't program to save the new industry they bought.

CFC isn't going to make a dent in the XJ supply. How many hundreds of thousands were produced in 16+ years of production?

Well how many are for sale in the newspaper/autotrader for under $4500? The last 3 I bought were all under that, 97 $1250, 91 $800, and another 91 for $500. At least two of these they bought new cars. They all would have been destroyed under this program. There are a lot out there that people will have problems getting them smogged too. I'm not saying they all will be traded and destroyed but I think in the end you might be surprised by the numbers that do. I hate this because there are a lot that can be saved from this though I doubt anyone will pay what the govt program will. Makes me sad.

I guess i missed that good info on there :).

EDIT: Not to mention, there are only 21 vehicles that qualify for purchase under this new plan

There are a lot more than that. Ford/Lincoln/Mercury alone has 20 vehicles to choose from. Toyota has 22, I believe.

I disagree totally. We can easily afford the new car but would not have considered it with out the additional $4750 off (4500 + 300 - 50). Don't get me wrong, I wouldn't have voted for the program but am I going to ignore a potential windfall? That would be stupid.

Will some be lost? Sure. Will there be legions left long after the program is over? Yep.

The program is expected to cost $1 billion, which covers 250,000 cars. Gee I wonder where that Billion will come from?!? Another Govt sponsored Sapository.

Only $750,000,000 for the cars. So about 170,000 cars. Maybe 10,000 xjs near the end of their lives? Out of what maybe 4,000,000 produced?

Where is the money coming from. Were mortgaging your kids future with interest.

I wonder just how this will affect the wholesale car market, small used car dealers, and salvage yards who rely on low cost cars. If a salvage yard can't sell any of the drivtrain then what can they really make money on.

Programs like this make me think of all the crap the folks in Europe have to deal with. When I was in the UK it pretty common to see nothing but 5 year old and newer cars almost entirely.

looks like XJ's qualify for $3,500.00 govt. voucher upon trade in. Tempting to strip all the upgrades off the XJ, trade it in for a econo box for the kid to drive.

I got 4500 for mine. :greensmok

Honestly, I hope the whole thing gets crushed. I don't want any part of that cursed POS finding it's way on to someone elses XJ.

I agree it is a socialist program but so is social security, medicare, medicaid, farm aid, etc., etc., etc. It will have a minimal effect on the secondary market. We are talking 170k cars spread acrossed the whole US. 3400 per state.

Think about how bad a job Bush had to do to get Obama elected.

PS I voted for Bush 2x but he and his team was incredibly incompetent not to mention potentially criminal. McCain? Did the mirror even fog when brought to his mouth?! Oh Vey!
