Can't edit/delete my posts?

Right after I create a new topic I can edit it (at least I know I did the other day). Now I'm going back to update it and the edit button is not found.

I am logged in.
The msg at the bottom says I can edit my posts.

Ideas?

yes you can edit but only for a short time..I actually forget how long it is but something like an hour after you post. then only the mods can edit posts.

Okay. So why is this? What benefit does it serve to anyone to not be able to edit a post they created after some short interval?

In this particular case I'm trying to invite others to attend a trail run. The main post has the details. If the details (say the time we're leaving - since that's the issue) change then I have to update the thread somewhere down in the body of it instead of the place where everyone is looking.

Is there a reason why it is configured this way?

You can ask a Moderator to edit your post if you need to add run details etc... to it.

As for "why" it is like that, it has been discussed many times in the past. Short and sweet is that is creates less issues.
