c 8.25 u bolt conversion on DS yoke.

What exactly is the problem one is trying to "Fix" by modifying the yoke to take a u-bolt instead of a strap? Straps do a fine job of retaining the joint assuming one takes the time to get the joint inside the retaining points on the yoke.

Mine strap sheared a bolt without even blowing up the joint, on the street, at about 15mph leaving my neighborhood. Took me a long time to get the broken bolt out, and when I did I drilled the yoke out and installed the ubolts. No problem since then. Made the change about 2 years ago.

So is this a patch to cover up poor maintenance, poor installation, or bad yokes? Just trying to figure out the necessity.

It is very easy to get the cap stuck on-top of the retaining point on the yoke, so you have to be careful of that. A U-bolt will not save you from shucking a cap because you installed the u-joint wrong.

I have never been able to put enough stress on a DS joint to blow it up, and I don't treat my stuff nicely. I also re-use my straps and bolts.

I use the u bolts and love them. If it takes out the driveshaft as long as the yoked fine I can just throw my spares in and go.

Straps don't hold up well when you grind them into rocks. It wont take much trail impact till the strap no longer holds the cap firmly in place. U-bolts will fix that problem and the nut is a little harder to hit as well. However one mush take care not to over torque the u-bolts or you can crack a cap.

Yes, avoid the bolt/straps at all costs. The u bolt is ideal and can take a good amount of rock rash before giving up the ghost.
