Build thread: Johnny 5 and his pal Henry

well the exhaust is all buttoned up...had to do a slight adjustment on the tranny cable (the bracket was bent for some reason. going to get o-rings and some new hoses in a bit.

i think the starter is what is causing the issue. i still cant get the reverse lights to come on, but the NSS is definitely working. i tested the switch wire to the starter with the nss in place and when i turned the key it metered 12V at the switch wire. out of curiosity, i pulled the power wire off the starter too and hooked it to a starter in the parts pile and it fired right off. so somewhere i have a connection not happening inside the starter. this isn't a brand new starter but it only have about 5000 miles when it was pulled. shame on me for not bench testing it. i think it will still work, i just have to figure out where the bad connection is and fix it

just put a 5spd in it and push start it all the time..that sounds easy enough

boom...done. actually after having a 5 speed in the manche, i kind of dig the manual tranny.

pulled the starter tonight and figured out what was going on. there was a little cover in the inside the switch wire connector that was getting in the way. got it pushed out of the way and put back together and she fires on her own took her for a spin around the yard then up and down the block on the private road behind our yard. tranny shifts fine, steering is very tight and it rides really well. have a lot of little things to deal with...mainly a big coolant leak somewhere. i hope the parts store radiator isn't leaking already :(

put a hole in the parts store front window and throw the radiator through it....

alright...got gauges going. cleaned and bent the pins and no dice. so i decided to try the other strange fix that i had heard. in some rare cases, the circuit board for the keyless entry can short out killing the gauges and a few other weird things. since my key fob stopped working at the same time, i decided to open the dome light and see...sure enough there was some char on the circuit board, so i unplugged the module and voila, the gauges all hopped up where they should be. its a very rare occurrence, but i did find several threads about it, so it does happen. if your gauges go dead, but your odo works and your key fobs are dead...look into this. It means I don't have keyless entry anymore, but i am swapping the overhead console out anyway so i'm not sure if it would have mattered...

now i have a whole mess of transmission codes to deal with
p1694, p1698, p0705...

my torque converter is not locking up either so i'm sure its probably on the same harness...either way if the TCU is bad, then i have a spare from a 99 for that tranny that will work too. the only other engine code i am getting is for a high voltage evap purge. so my evap solenoid may be bad.

do you want the fobs with this new overhead console? I need to yank the wiring too before I forget.

alright...swapped out the TCU and got the P16** codes to go away (came back when i plugged the other one back in) but occasionally the P0705 comes back. its the transmission range sensor. im guessing the NSS may still need some tweaking and cant tell its in drive because there is no signal. that is what allows the tranny to go into OD and locks up the torque converter...so when its not working, the jeep won't shift out of 3rd. its a bit of a pain. i pulled the connector out and cleaned the pins on it and put some dielectic on it...hopefully that will help.

all check engine and tranny codes are gone now. running pretty well, but i think i have a sticky injector. i'm ordering a rebuilt set of injectors for it as we speak as well as 2 gallons of this:

hopefully will start sanding/painting next week. i am using a friends set up in his barn, so i'm going to start with a spare hood and hatch that i have until i get the hang of it. that way if i screw it up, it will be easy to re-do...once i get the hang of it, then ill move to the body. i've acquired a few more parts, but i'm going to have to wait until spring to install the lift. until then i will be on the hunt for seats and new carpet. the wet dog smell is pretty bad when i'm spending 6-8 hours in the jeep at a time...

Re: Re: Build thread: Johnny 5 and his pal Henry

I have an ozone generator at work. 8 hrs and i make all the stinky go away
We had one of those at the cleaning service I worked at in high school...pretty amazing. I'm at leas going to replace the carpet in the cargo area...it has something black on it that won't wash out. Either that or its worn through...the front carpet is okay, and I really want to get weather tech liners for it.

There is a pimp set of wj seats at a yard here that I am going to try to snag...if I can get home on a weekday soon.

Paint will be here this weekend. Not sure on the 784 injectors though. I'm hoping I got enough paint foe both the jeep and the trailer

Nothing beats pulling the carpet to power wash them and let dry in the sun, but we use Arm&Hammer cat box deodorizer powder in the carpets of cars we get ready to sell. Sprinkle some on let sit for a day or two then vacuum up. Now it doesn't help with carpet that's always wet, but works wonders on carpet that may have been wet from a window being left down or broken(more often then not in my case at the car lot.

drug some body panels with me to nyc and took them to my buddies shop. started stripping, sanding and priming. i have an extra hatch and hood that are up there as well, so i'm just going to paint the fenders, header panel, hatch and hood off the jeep, then worry about the rest. so far i don't have too much into the project...maybe $150-175 in supplies including a cheap sprayer. i should have enough to do the trailer too when it comes time. i was shocked at how easy those stickers come off with a heat gun.

i also think i might be considering these as a wheel option:

anyone ever run solid steel wheels with their jeep before? part of me wants to run solid wheels that are painted tan to match the jeep...not sure how i feel about it yet though

Installed the 784's last night...I was skeptical, but also needed injectors and the price was right. They were used, but flushed and flow tested and rebuilt. Honestly they definitely made a difference. Idle is a lot smoother and it picks up faster when you stomp on it. I really don't think there was and power gains, but it does run better so I'm happy.

I also put the front shaft back in and had to do a pretty major linkage adjustment. Couldn't even get close to getting it in 4 lo. It sound like one of my front joints is shot though, hopefully it will hang on until I get home.

Also sanding spray paint sucks...
