Build thread: Johnny 5 and his pal Henry

alright...i haven't pull the pan to verify it, but i'm going to go ahead and call this one a broken piston skirt. i checked the flex plate and it was solid and tight as can be...it appears that the valve are all functioning right and there is no play in any of the push rods or rocker arms. sounds like its coming from #1...regardless it has an 0331 head, and most likely a broken skirt....this motor is coming out. we need a second vehicle now, so im probably going to start pulling it tomorrow after the interview.

i am making the right choice here right? if the skirt is broken that the motor needs a rebuild most likely correct? i'm hoping i can salvage the block and use it as a start of a stroker build that will eventually go in this jeep...

i guess what i'm asking is if its worth it to pull the pan or head? i feel like at this point, i should just pull the motor. this jeep is going to see some miles, so i would rather not just try to put it back together for the heck of it. i have the jasper motor i can get for $300, a 95 motor with reasonable mileage thats been painted for $125 or a 99 with fairly low miles for 200...i feel like i need to just pull it and swap it instead of messing around.

look who followed me home today...took a risk with bald tires, no lights and no plates, but it was a short trip in the daylight to get it here. i will have to wait a few days before i can start working in it. free time sucks right now :(

this view gives a good idea of the actual trailer size...needs to have a longer tongue, but i love the size of it

Well a 4.0 fits nicely in a wj :) drinking bourbon and prepping this beast to go in j5. This motor used to be in chedisme's rig from the nac. ...also known as the guy who's suburban shit the bed on the way to Moab last year ...96 jasper rebuild that has been around for a while. Only about 40k on the clock

well despite the stumbling, i managed to get the motor sealed and painted. i didn't replace the water pump, though i think i'm going to swap the thermo out for a new one. gm orange was about the only color option i have. getting to work pulling the old motor tomorrow :)

And so it begins...a few days later than planned due to work.

Got everything disconnected in the engine bay...I have a full baby free day tomorrow to finish getting it out. Will hopefully at least have the new motor I'm place tomorrow night

Do the rearmain/oil pump when the motor is out.

i was debating that...but the donor motor only has 40k on a fresh rebuild, so i'm torn. i actually have the seal an the pan gasket, just haven't done it yet. i also get a little nervous about it because i haven't really done many and i'm always worried about f-ing it up and having to do it over again.

my other issue is that i have to get the pilot bushing out...i'm debating just picking up the tool to do it since i might be pulling a few more soon

For me it's about a 2 hour job, but I also put the pan in the parts washer, fix any bent lips on the pan, rear main, check all bearings, blablabla. Working on customer cars I afford myself that time.
