They simply hold the axle square to the leafs instead of relying on the bolts. The addition of our comp shackles with 14" of travel will put more shear stress on the u bolts (or bolts in our case). A panhard bar would serve the same purpose as well.

I am getting close to the point where I will be installing a Sterling in my XJ and have been thinking about perch length and spring attachment and some sort of system to control axle wrap. There is a bit of rear steer going on with changing spring lengths and I could see the leaves shearing bolts if the spacing were too narrow. I am interested to see how it works out for you.

Got a quick question about your leaf springs....
In the beginning of the build you said you had old man emu leafs, but in the latter part of the build the leafs look different, almost like iron rock leafs?
Just curious what your running and what size?

I do think perch length helps to an extent, but it doesn't necessarily prevent the leafs from wrapping. Axle wrap is actually what kicked off this latest round of mods for me. I kept going through leaf springs and nuking pinion bearings even with 8" long spring pads and a longer (4") bolt spacing on the u bolt eliminators (Granted I have a little more power than the average 4.0). Ultimately an anti-wrap bar moved up on my to do list.

I've also witnessed a bunch of U bolt and spring pin failures by my toyota friends simply because the leafs are putting so much shear load on the hardware.

I did start out with OME HD leafs, but they ended up wrapping so badly the pinion bearings went out in less than 5000 miles. Pinion angle was set correctly at a couple degrees below the DS as well. I now have the IRO 3.5" leafs and have noticed them wrapping as well, although not as much as the OME's. I'm hoping they'll at least last a little longer with the addition of the anti-wrap bar.

That's what I thought. I have clapped out 4.5" rough country springs with no lift shackle relo and your comp shackles.

I have a set of tnt's ubolt eliminator's to install so I was thinking the 3.5" IRO springs would be good to switch to with the 1.5" lift I'll get from the eliminator's.... I'm just worried if the IRO springs are too short I'm kinda screwed.... Guess I'll find out...

I had a wrap issue before the bigger axles with 2" OME leaves so my rig won't come off the stands without something like a traction bar. Thanks for the info!

They seemed (for me at least) to give me more than 3.5" but I'm not sure FWIW.

Can't wait till I get this rear end squared away! Then I can move on to the front. Your build has been a big inspiration, you do some amazing work! And I'm loving your shackles!!

You wouldn't be interested in making another one of those crossmembers would you?

I'm on my second set of ome hd springs. Just finished replacing the pinion bearing....again. The springs are warped like a piece of wet spaghetti. Maybe the Aussie boys just can't hang with us.

I wanted one, and was gonna get one, but kept finding posts/threads of them leaking, or popping very quickly, sounded like there was a bad run for a while so I waited.

Like to hear how yours has been and what you think, or if you'd buy one again?

True. Although I like the challenge of making the leafs work well instead of ditching them entirely. Along with the high clearance aspects compared to links, and the fact that the anti-wrap bar should help protect the DS were also considerations that pushed me to keep them.

It's been holding up great! However like many, right out of the box there was a leak. Fortunately I pressure tested it before installing and simply welded up the pin hole. I highly recommend pressure testing any aftermarket radiator before installing for that reason, especially those from china. Overall, I've been happy with it and would probably buy one again.

Didn't get much time this weekend to knock stuff out, but I was able to throw a shock in, measure for limiting straps and bolted on some bump stop extensions....

I think 14" will be plenty...

Threw some straps on this past weekend. When the suspension compresses, the straps move diagonally to clear the bump stops. Not sure if I'll need some bungees or not, but time will tell.





I also cut up the exhaust and reworked it to clear all the new junk I've thrown in. It ends up sitting pretty close to the bump stop in order to clear the truss, but some exhaust wrap should prevent any meltage.







I should hopefully have the sliders back on here soon as well. The to do list is getting A LOT smaller! arty:

I'd love to, but it will be more of a last minute decision depending on time and funds. I'll know more once it gets closer. :thumbup:
