Best Off Road Tires

as for best offroad tire i have run, creepy crawler wins hands down. i'm on my third set and they continue to impress me on and off the street and are extremely durable.

Myself, i believe the MT/R is the most versatile for a rig that will be street and trail driven. Best tire no where, but the best average all around tire.

Must be an east coast popular tire? I've seen them on a few lifted tow rigs, but I dont think I have ever once seen an MTZ on a trail rig out here.

I wonder how they hold up in the rocks.

mtrs (the old style anyway) don't seem to offer the same traction on the right coast as most other modern radial "mud" tires, sidewalls also seem to fall victim to cuts more often.

mtzs are proving themselves to be a great tire for most every terrain (including the street) out here, are arent too expensive either (until you start getting into the big wheel sizes anyway) Everyone i know who runs them loves them, and some have even gone out and gotten a second set before even considering trying a new tire.

I've been running Firestone destination MTs for a few years and have not had a problem with them at all. They were $750 for four 31s (buy 3 get one free) when I bought em.

i got cooper discovery sst's in 35x12.5x15, $871 mounted and balanced with warranty. So far i really like them, traction is good and i dont have any sidewall damage yet, which i couldnt say for my km2's. i usually dont even air them down and they still grip pretty good ('m lazy). they ride nice on the road as well, especially for a fairly agressive tread pattern. I'd say they're close to on par with the km2's for tread/traction which i did like also except for the sidewall damage.
I'm curious about the mtr kevlars. they seem decent from what i see on other rigs, and i almost got a set myself. the reason why i didnt is because it's getting very hard to find them in a 35x12.5x15. The coopers were gotten on a sunday, which is nice if/when you need an emergency replacement.

I've been waiting years to get a set of mtzs on a rig and I am extremely happy. Crawled up places I thought for sure would give me trouble, great in the rain, quiet enough on the street. I've seen them in snow and I hope we have a ridiculous winter to use em.

my 35" km2s... fell victim to sidewall cuts and were replaced under 4wheelparts the roadhazard warraty for free. I was completely happy with them.

I had the same thing happen, but wasn't so happy.

I split one sidewall in November, another in March. I've been waiting for roadhazard warranty replacements for SEVEN MONTHS, because BFG couldn't be bothered to make any 35-15s... Had they been honest and told me up front that it would be seven months plus, I could have returned em on the spot, got something different, and moved on. But BFG sales reps lied to me on five different occasions, assuring me every month that they'd run "next week for sure."

I finally gave up and returned em last week.

To sum up, BFG = paper thin sidewall, zero product support, and grossly dishonest (or incompetant) customer service.

Do. Not. Buy. Them.
(Unless it's the two barely-used ones I'm selling for a huge loss, cause I can't get matches for em! You can buy those!)

I walked into a 4wheel parts with my bad tire, and within 5 minutes i walked out with a new one without having to spend a dime. As for the paper thin sidewall, im impressed that out of 60k miles i only had 2 cuts. They were well wheeled, often on sharp rocks.

If you have the money go spend, go with the maxxis trepadors. Best tire I have ever had on the rocks. Beat my old KM2 and MTR. Best tire so far for me.

What size?

I was personally on the phone and emailing with BFG, at least every month, for seven months, trying for my 35x12.50-15s. Five times they told me "Next week for sure."

TireRack still shows them backordered today. Their site says 7-27, but that date has changed at least three times that I've seen. From 6-15, to 6-26, to 7-17, to now 7-27. Always at least two or three weeks out...

As for the sidewalls, I split two tires in three trips, within four months. In Ohio.

They do well on the street, I'll give you that. They ride nice, handle well, not too loud, and wear great: The two I have left are still 95% tread.

But with the offroad failures and resulting runaround I got, I'll discourage anybody from buying BFG's. Ever.

im running 33x12.50x15 KM2's on 15x8's and i love them and iv never had a problem balancing them but then again i have tire beads lol...when i go wheeling i air them down to 13 to 15 psi and they do great on the trails. I do mostly rockcrawling but i have done some mudding and there great.

I have had good luck with my Firestone Destination MT's in a 285/75/16. They are an E load range which has worked great for my heavier rig (cage, bumpers, etc). I siped the center tread blocks for better grip on the snow (which it rarely gets driven in). They do really well on the rocks here in CO and slick rock Moab. At 12lbs, they fold and grab well on the rocks.

I have only two complaints. One, they are loud. Two, they do have a tendency to "chunk" a little bit, meaning you lose bigger sections of the tread blocks. That said, it hasn't happened in a ton of places, even with the siping.

They balance out well with standard wheel weights.

I have also had Truxs MT's which had good rock grip and did really well int he snow. They were a pain to balance though. I have also had the old BFG MT's which I hated.

If money is no object, the Toyo MT's are awesome. My buddy on his TJ has then and they have worn well, balanced well, and have good grip in everything.

Otherwise, most of the guys I wheel with like the older style Goodyear MTR's.

Thanks guys! I will be living in Utah in August so most of my wheeling will be that area of the country.

BFG AT's. You don't need a mud tire there. The AT's will last a long time too!

BFG A/T's are great tire for every day driving and lite wheeling but if u do any real wheeling at all u will want M/T's
Says the guy from Kentucky. A whole different type of wheeling out there... Lots of mud etc. A/T's pretty much rule the roost in So Cal, they're a perfect all around tire, and do amazing in the desert. A BFG A/T would do well in Utah as well.

I really like my MTR-k's. Before this, always had success with (and still my favorite AT tire, so far.)the Bridgestone Dueler AT REVO and 693's. Dayton TImberline AT's worked well also.
What partially swayed me to the MTR-k was a local place that had a killer deal on them, I run 31x10.5 BTW. That, and GY usually has rebates + if you are/sign up to become a treadlightly.org member (only 25$) you also get an additional 100$ MIR. SO between the 80$ GY factory rebate and the 100$ TL.org rebate in the end I essentially only paid for 3 tires. Since you are going larger, YMMV cost-wise.
