Aussie in the d30

A lunch box locker will replace the side and spider gears in the open carrier. No need to replace the carrier and reset the gears.
Thanks Josh. So anything but a on demand and a Detroit are still limited slips. :anon:

A Detroit works the same as a lunchbox locker. Units like the Detroit locker and grizzly locker are full carrier replacement lockers. New gear setup is required at the time of install. They are auto lockers. When torque is applied it 'locks' both axle shafts and drives both equally. When torque is removed, ie coasting, the diff unlocks and allows independent axle rotation with a ratchet like action.

Lunchbox lockers work the same they are just replacing the spider gears. No gear setup is required as the carrier is not changed.

Limited slip diffs always allow an amount of 'limited' differential slip action between the axle shafts. They are not locked together.

Hope that helps skipper. Limited slips are worthless in the rocks. They do little to nothing helpful.

Just a little addition to Gordo's note. A limited slip will help quite a bit over a stock open diff (as you've seen in your Jeep) and a new, tight limited slip will work pretty well for awhile but will never completely lock up. Limited slips also wear out over time causing them to "slip" more and "limit" less but can be rebuilt to tighten them back up. Plus, most limited slips require the special friction modifier additive to help them work to their full potential. So, a limited slip will limit how far you can push the traction on your rig, but will also make it very unlikely that you'll ever break a shaft due to having a bound up locker in the rocks. :D

the truetrac is a gear actuated posi, not a clutch disc style- skipper said he is a running a detroit trutrack. The modifiers for the clutch style actually help them unlock , not lock, so if you want it to lock up more, then don't run the additive in a clutch style.

Just for reference. I have a trac lock in my 8.8. LSDs might be ok off road on smaller tires. I re packed mine myself. Paid extra for the cobra carbon disks. Packed it extra tight. Didn't use modifier. Doesn't work at all in the rocks on my 35s. Almost no difference from open.

Trutrac is about the best LSD there is. It is a ratio gear driven diff as was said earlier. And I like the idea of have it in the rear to help with turning radius on the train. However I will just be welding up my 8.8 for now. I would really like more traction in the rear.

You guys are awesome. Thank you so much for the explanations and the clarifications. I am starting to understand the differences.
I like the trutrac in the rear unless I have a wheel off the ground. I will go with a selectable in the front.

To the OP- I love the lockrite in my Dana 30, Hiimmred gave it to me, so I am the second owner and it has been working great. My 8.25 died so it is getting a Detroit.

Where you installing at?
If it is not too far a drive I would be up for it, I have installed 4 or 5 Aussie's, ran them in a few of my jeeps never had an issue.

Make sure you get your caps marked if they are not, a good torque wrench helps. Also what gears are you running, as you might have to pull the ring gear, I think it is 411's and below but I could be wrong.
