ARB D44 locker RD06 or RD116

I am trying to find out what the differences are between the 1st gen. RD06 and 2nd gen. RD116 ARB air locker for the Dana 44. I have an opportunity to buy a RD06 for $500, but am not sure if I should or purchase the newer RD116 if it is a stronger design.

Any one have any info?

There has been quite a few failures with "all" the multi-piece carriers, even more so with the D30.

i believe the problem is that the bolts that hold the 3rd piece on, walk out and the thing self destructs. with the 2 piece design, the ring gear bolts hold both halves together.

Sorry for the ancient resurrect but this falls in line with what i was searching for.

I have an RD06 locker installed in a xj d44 from a parts rig without anything else so I'm searching for what other parts i need to make it all work.

If the third part is week from the bolt would it be possible to use, dare i say it, loctite?

That may help, I'd probably go with the red stuff. I seem to recall though that the preferred solution was safety wiring the bolts to prevent them from walking out far enough to cause a problem. That is however a distant memory that I didn't pay much attention to as I have the RD116 in mine. Take it for what it's worth...

If you get new bolts from ARB they come with thread locker already on them. I've been running the older version for about 6 years now...

do you know what grade bolts they are? In my experience it's usually cheaper to get bolts from ACE or similar...

I emailed ARB and they sent me a parts list but it doesn't say anything about whether or not it has locker on it. Do you use the blue or the red?

It's not the threads backing out so much as it is the carrier pieces losing their preload. The case pieces have a slight curvature to them so that they flatten out when assembled and torqued. With large tires and axle housings flexing, the preload wears out and the cases start to weaken. As mentioned in an earlier post, it's more so on the Dana 30 applications. Haven't seen it so much in the D44 in Jeeps, but the redesign was worthy anyway. I've been almost 9 years into my front D44 with the old style locker and 37s...and it's all working just fine.

If you know the history of the RD06, run it. If you have any questions about what to look for, call ARB's tech dept. (888) 427-2872

Yeah, that sounds more like something i won't encounter. Not that I won't try, but I don't think I will be going bigger than 31's for awhile. At least not until I can get the pieces together for a home brew lift. Also it was good to get a parts list and blow up diagram i can go off of when i take it all apart and clean and inspect it and make sure everything works when i re-install it. I just don't want to go out and buy all the equipment to get it working, install the d44 rear, and hit the switch and find out there was a crack somewhere that made it grenade the first time out haha. But yeah in all reality it will be awhile and maybe another body upgrade before i hit the hard stuff again; I just hate seeing the thing sit on a stand on the side of the shop
