I take the easiest route possible. I run the stock dana 35c. I have never broken it. But I have "only" 29" tall tires with no lockers and don't wheel hard at all.
Just carry spare shafts. I bought right and left spare dana 35c axle shafts and c clips for a total of $30 from a junkyard. At that price I can break lots of axleshafts before an 8.8 or a dana 44 would have been a more economical choice.
