im thinking of putting a msd blaster coil, or an accel coil in my '90 xj. im hoping for a little faster start up and a few more mpg's. i will also add a new rotor, wires and plugs at this time. so are these preformance coils worth it?

I had an Accel coil on my 98...looking back now...it wasn't worth the hassle. The 1st one lasted 6 months before it failed (kept stalling). I contacted Accel (not real enthusiastic about helping a customer), and they had me ship it to them. After about 3 months of phone calls and e-mails, I finally got my replacement. That one lasted about 9 months before it just died one day on my wife in the ATM lane at the bank (she was 8 months pregnant and had our 4 year old with her, it is an understatememt to say she was upset). Since I was at work and couldn't leave, I had AAA tow it to a local shop that soaked us for $250 to tell me it was a bad coil. I now have a "stock" coil, and didn't notice much difference between the two.

I've got the msd which was a drop in replacement. Kinda iffy on whether or not it does anything.

i have had the same experience with that coil(minus the $250 and angry wife part). i think i saw a while ago on JU that Dino said that the accel coil didn't work well because it let too much current into the coil which caused them to burn up easily...or something like that.

If you want to cure a slow start in a RENIX, think about checking your battery and starter. The slow start is caused by aging parts in the starting system - since the ECM won't kick out ignition and fuel injection pulses until it reads 300rpm at the crankshaft...

Something to think about. A new coil don't matter if it isn't being told to do anything.

I don't think it was me who said that but it's true that many Jeepers have returned defective Accel coils because they took a dump after only a few months. The MSD 8228 is a good stock replacement and I haven't heard anything bad about that one (I have one as a spare).

hey dino, since you have used it, do you think the msd coil is worth it for power increase, or is it just a good replacement for stock???

I've got this coilhttp://www.performancedistributors.com/jeep4.0.htm .

It's been in for over a year now with no problems. Did I notice a difference? Not really. Is it helping? I hope so. :)

I'm also running MSD's offroad 6 ignition and their super conductor wires.

I haven't used it yet (I did say it's a spare) but I wouldn't expect a performance increase unless the stock coil starts to misfire. Just think of it as a good stock replacement.
