addition gas tank idea...

I've been looking at those $199 trailers that home depot sells, putting a 100 or 250 gallon tank on it with a hand pump then buying gas directly from a retailer/supplier ...

look into the DRMO office at the nearest military instalation. they might be selling an old POL (patrolium, oil, lubricants- fuel) trailer. that or check with places that sell old mil equipment.

Does anyone know just how Rocky Road gets 32 gal into the available space? I am suspicious that this tank may extend lower than the stock tank, making the skid plate unusable and of course dealing a blow to departure angle.

Reading this thread has got me interested in the RRO tank, I am also curious as to the clearance loss, if any, there will be.

Here is Oz when they do a dual fuel propane conversion they fit the propane tank where the standard gas tank is and fit a new gas tank under the floor opposite the muffler. You can also buy them as an aux. tank to extend your range. They only hold just over 14 gallons but thats not too bad.

GoJeep I have a question for you, how does the sending unit work with your additional tank capacity (using the up-turned vent tube from your web site). When its full, does the gauge just completely full until those extra 5 gallons are burned off and its back to the normal capacity? I was thinking of getting a 90 degree bent piece of pipe and connecting it to the old vent tube using a short link of fuel hose.

Checked the website again and don't think it's gonna work; it's for up to '95 and again, on my '98 the pump/sender/filter mounting system is about 6-8 inches wide on top of tank, unit is BIG.

Looks like major mods on anything above an EFI xj '96/'97 not sure when my pump system was introduced.

Yep , you hit the nail right on the head. Just stays full with the needle about an 1/8" past the full mark and stays there until the extra fuel is used. Better this way too so you always know when you are going to run out as empty still means empty. ;)

From the site.
The new tank hangs from the front by the original special bolts. The tank is huge and takes advantage of nearly all available space in its location. It hangs down further, too, which might be a problem. A custom-sized tank, with a few less gallons, might be the answer for more clearance.

A have diven someone else's XJ with just a OME lift and long range rear tank like the one shown landed straight down on his brand new tank the first rock ledge I dropped off. A bigger lift and tyres might have cleared it though as this one was only running 30's at the time.

Empty on my rig means "you probably have close to 1/4 tank". I know this because I add 1/2 tank on empty (10 of 20 gal) it reads 3/4 tank plus it just seems like I've got more. At least its not the other way round. Maybe I should replace the sending unit.

Baja, I have the same problem since I swapped out clusters for a broken speedo.

The old cluster was empty on E, the newer one E means about 4 gallons of gas left.

Now I know I should just swap out the gas guage between em, but me being the bright boy that I am I gave away the broken cluster before I realized the gas guage wasn't working.

When you run accross a fix let me know.

Wrong1 I doubt it as I have swapped the gauge cluster for a different one that has the tachometer and full gauges. Its exactly the same other than the old cluster had a big gas gauge. Also, it read E on exactly empty when I got it years ago and seems to get worse every time I take it off road. I'm suspecting that I need to check the wiring plugs or the sending unit and maybe even pressure test the gas line (for other reasons).

The answer I recieved was "a bit over an inch".

The reciever hitch may just about make that moot wrt departure angle, but then again rocks don't grow on nice neat angles.

mumble, mumble, mumble.........

It is doable.
I put a tank like that from aero on my 98'
What you need to get it done is the kit from hesco that is for puting a late motor in a cj. The kit is expensive but includes a good pump and a regulator to send the unneeded fuel back to the tank. Then you need to pull apart the stock pump/sending unit and mount that where the new in tank pump would hang though a 3" hole you can use the wires they use for the pump for the sending unit and all is well.
Will not be ODBII but I have not had a problem.

Appreciate the info, I have the factory skid plate, will leave well enough alone.

I found these five-gallon poly gas containers at AutoGnome that have a separate "snout" that makes dropping gold, uh..., I mean gas, relatively easy into my '98's filler hole.

They are used in rotation w/fill-ups, and four of 'em provide me with enough range to get to nh w/o refueling or about five days worth of ac power should the home generator need fuel.

I do appreciate the advice, and glad this much new info is now on the forum.

Thanks again, God Bless
