First off, don't have permission (don't know how?!?) to post photos directly in message, that's why there's links above.

Thinking about semi-permanently mounting the former where some posters build cargo boxes, and if I can't plumb directly into stock oem tank beneath it, use the latter for mid-trip refueling and for my home emergency generator.

Don't want to store jerry cans out back, I'm thinking that in a rear-ender they are basically asking to engulf the xj, my logic (though very fallible) tells me to build some sort of hd enclosure for the tank, venting it outside of course.

Need constructive criticism, visiting the gas station 50% less often is a great motivator.

Oversized tank is the way to go, you really don't want to put a tank or fuel cell inside the cargo area, bad karma. I've been looking at those $199 trailers that home depot sells, putting a 100 or 250 gallon tank on it with a hand pump then buying gas directly from a retailer/supplier but I have to see what the covenents in my community say about gasoline storage.

That tank would be awesome, but I don't think it's designed with the internal fuel injection fuel pump in mind, plus the cost is way over my budget. Actually, if it did work w/my '98, I probably would find the scratch.

Rich, I have an aluminum trailer, I've seen those hand pump tanks at marinas, can't be more than a couple of hundred bucks, 100 gallons would be more than enough.

When I read the fuel-consumption specs on my generator and how much fuel it goes through a day, ten gallons ain't gonna cut it. But I still need to permanently increase the fuel capacity of the xj, I'm close to having the down payment on a small getaway in way northern NH, need the extra range.

When I read the fuel-consumption specs on my generator and how much fuel it goes through a day, ten gallons ain't gonna cut it.

Been there done that, cabin in now 12 VDC solar and wind power running water and all.
Cooking indoors and hotwater is propane.

I meant gas for my home generator; want to rotate the fuel via the xj w/following benefits;

in case of a power outage, will have at least fifty gallons of fuel for the xj and home emergency generator, and have extra capacity for long trips up north via either a bigger replacement tank, or permanent piggyback tank.

I guess this post really should have clarified both issues, I didn't realize how they were both interdependent.

I know that if I was going to do a new roof now I'd reroof with solar slates, get it subsidized thru several programs and with it being a vacation home you would end up with some pretty good cashback or credit from the power company.
I'm considering a shed dormer on the south facing side of my house, already have an 8ft header in there for a sliding door, put it in when I built it. From the calcs on the page I checked out a 16x 20ft roof done with solar slates would cut my electric in half.

As for extending range on the XJ an internally mounted fuel cell that you could remove would work. I would not want any thing made of plastic back there inside the vehicle in the event of a rear ender. If it was plastic I'd get something that would fit in a safari rack and put it up on the roof, fill it up there and then syphoning to refill then stock tank would be a breeze.

Well what does the mod to the vent line in the tank gain? it's like only 5 extra gallons, right? Probably not enough extra for you. But I've been thinking about it. An extra 5 gallons wouldn't be bad.

Here is Oz when they do a dual fuel propane conversion they fit the propane tank where the standard gas tank is and fit a new gas tank under the floor opposite the muffler. You can also buy them as an aux. tank to extend your range. They only hold just over 14 gallons but thats not too bad.

If you *really* want something in there premanent consider having two tanks custom built to go between the frame rails and the rockers. My 69 willys wagoneer had it's main gas tank on the drivers side in that spot, previous owner added another 30 gallon tank to the rear where our XJ's tanks are. Don't know how you would work the plumbing though, whether directly to the fuel rail with another pump or a pump to pump to the main tank.

Ideally, but in an imperfect world, ten more gallons and finally installing those 4.10's I have with the 31's I'm already running would get me up to NH w/o having to refuel (and staying in third all the time).

There's a vertical aluminum tank I think on the West Marine link, that mounted in the spare tire area, and welding a box around it, may work.

I'm brainstorming that the Rocky Road tank Clean-RC suggested can be modified, cutting the large diameter opening on the roof to drop the large threaded "nut" assembly and pump into it. I picked up the oem pump assembly ($313 otd) a few weeks ago because of last summer's fiasco spinning the pump dry for 10-15 minutes in 90* heat, the new one is sitting on the shelf in my garage waiting for me to make up my mind.

If the hole idea is possible, I'm wondering what effect 32 gallons will have on the gas gauge, I imagine that "E" would translate into about 10-12 gallons still available, but then it's trip od time and I hate that method of keeping track of fuel supply.

The 32 Gallon Tank comes with a new fuel sender unit. Your gauge will be accurate
