Apparently I'm lagging a bit on the "who is Cal" thread, my dad's about to get married and we just spent a 'last weekend' together before his fiancé moves in.
Lets see.
I'm 31, live in Pasadena and I am a jeep-o-holic. Oh wait, wrong forum. I started offroading when I was 9, on dirt bikes. By the time I was 15 I had 11 bikes and a 4x4 truck. Not very long after getting my truck I very nearly lost my dad to a bad accident in stoddard valley, and stepped away from offroading for several years. In 2002 he and I randomly decided to take my truck and head to stoddard for a day. A couple weeks later he bought a range rover, and a few months later, I bought an XJ. We've been wheeling every chance we had every since.
I joined naxja in late 2004, and have been here just about three years now. In that time I have known most of our SoCal BOD personally, a few of the members very well.. and those BOD members who were active did a very good job - but I have never seen an entire 3 man team active all at once. There have also been issues with communication between BOD and the chapter members.. although Ron and Remi have gone out of their way to do what they can about this.
These are things I would like to see improve. I hadn't originally considered running for office, but after getting a call asking if I would consent, I got excited about the idea. As we are going into Naxja's 25th year, I believe the club is going to boom, and as we are of course the greatest chapter, we need to have our act together. The local group has been slowly breaking off into the "JV guys" and the "new guys", a line that no one wants but everyone can see starting to form. There are several great wheeling spots where the groups can get together and mend this (hello? truckhaven??).. not to mention Goatman's most excellent JV event every year, which really does a lot to bridge that gap.
As far as the chapter goes outside of just wheeling, we have a *TON* of new members coming in that people don't seem to get to know. I've had several people the last few months PM me with technical questions, and I notice three things - they are local, they are paid members, and I have never heard of them before.
I would like to see more unofficial get togethers where we all get some face time. Something like SoCalXJ's fiesta island event, where its all bring out the family and meet each other.
I'd also like to see SoCal play a major supporting role in the upcoming Fall Fling, as its supposed to be the greatest yet - and with (again) Goatman running things, we can all be sure it will be a good time.
Anyways, I'd like to see our very large chapter operate a bit more like a family and a bit less like a collection of cliques with a shared message board. Whether that happens under myself, JohnX or Robert (three very good candidates, you can't choose poorly) the upcoming seasons should be very exciting.
On to a somber note, I'd like to ask those of you who believe in such things to bow your heads at noon each day this week, and join me for a short group prayer for those of our members (and thousands who are not our members) that have been evacuated from their homes by threat of fire, and also to those brave folks who are working to fight the flames.
