Apparently I'm lagging a bit on the "who is Cal" thread, my dad's about to get married and we just spent a 'last weekend' together before his fiancé moves in.

Lets see.

I'm 31, live in Pasadena and I am a jeep-o-holic. Oh wait, wrong forum. I started offroading when I was 9, on dirt bikes. By the time I was 15 I had 11 bikes and a 4x4 truck. Not very long after getting my truck I very nearly lost my dad to a bad accident in stoddard valley, and stepped away from offroading for several years. In 2002 he and I randomly decided to take my truck and head to stoddard for a day. A couple weeks later he bought a range rover, and a few months later, I bought an XJ. We've been wheeling every chance we had every since.

I joined naxja in late 2004, and have been here just about three years now. In that time I have known most of our SoCal BOD personally, a few of the members very well.. and those BOD members who were active did a very good job - but I have never seen an entire 3 man team active all at once. There have also been issues with communication between BOD and the chapter members.. although Ron and Remi have gone out of their way to do what they can about this.

These are things I would like to see improve. I hadn't originally considered running for office, but after getting a call asking if I would consent, I got excited about the idea. As we are going into Naxja's 25th year, I believe the club is going to boom, and as we are of course the greatest chapter, we need to have our act together. The local group has been slowly breaking off into the "JV guys" and the "new guys", a line that no one wants but everyone can see starting to form. There are several great wheeling spots where the groups can get together and mend this (hello? truckhaven??).. not to mention Goatman's most excellent JV event every year, which really does a lot to bridge that gap.

As far as the chapter goes outside of just wheeling, we have a *TON* of new members coming in that people don't seem to get to know. I've had several people the last few months PM me with technical questions, and I notice three things - they are local, they are paid members, and I have never heard of them before.

I would like to see more unofficial get togethers where we all get some face time. Something like SoCalXJ's fiesta island event, where its all bring out the family and meet each other.

I'd also like to see SoCal play a major supporting role in the upcoming Fall Fling, as its supposed to be the greatest yet - and with (again) Goatman running things, we can all be sure it will be a good time.

Anyways, I'd like to see our very large chapter operate a bit more like a family and a bit less like a collection of cliques with a shared message board. Whether that happens under myself, JohnX or Robert (three very good candidates, you can't choose poorly) the upcoming seasons should be very exciting.

On to a somber note, I'd like to ask those of you who believe in such things to bow your heads at noon each day this week, and join me for a short group prayer for those of our members (and thousands who are not our members) that have been evacuated from their homes by threat of fire, and also to those brave folks who are working to fight the flames.

NAXJA has been around 25 years??????

Also, as any group grows those of like interests will congregate together. Thus we have the rock hounds, the mud wompers, the mountain goats and the desert rats.
The vast majority of us get along great (I just don't understand why anyone would voluntarily submerge thier Jeeps in 3' of mud!) Cliques are okay.

As they say in Chicago; Vote Early and Vote Often!

:D

Great info Cal!

Good luck!

I was not trying to imply that cliques are not okay - only that I'd like to see them interact more, and out of the jeep. ;)

XJ's 25th year.

Cal, I'm sure you've seen these questions for the other candiates so I will ask the same:

1. Do you prefer quantity or quality regarding membership drives?

2. What do you see are the 2 biggest issues with the SoCal chapter and how would you deal with them?

Nice intro and good luck!

Good catch, I hadn't had my coffee yet.. I was thinking ahead about fall fling 2008 and got 25th year on the brain.

I don't believe that it should be looked at in terms of quality vs quantity, particularly with the advent of 'forum supporter'; those people who are looking to not 'be in the black' can do so, without "watering down" Naxja membership (not that I necessarily feel they do, but that seems like what you were implying). I'd love to see tons of quality members, but then, we have tons of quality members - I think its as important to bring in new members as it is to get the current ones active. Socal has the numbers, but I see the same 15 people at every meet and greet that I have seeing for the last three years.

I think the biggest issue we have had is BOD members who have been less than dedicated *cough*present*cough* to the role, and the trickle down effect from that has been apparent in many ways.

I'm not looking to talk down on anyones job, but for both terms of SoCal's BOD to date, it has been on one or two members of the board to carry the weight of three, and this should change. As far as I can tell, all of the candidates for Pres and Vice this term are more than up to the task, under my leadership or anothers we are in for good times.

Our other issue compared to other chapters I have looked at, is (and very strangly) we have too many members too close together. When an event comes up, be it a run or a meeting, its easy to "just skip this one" because we have so many people doing so much on their own that it waters down formal events.

As far as dealing with this? Its not something that I think gets dealt with persay - I don't feel club members should need to be bribed with fantastic raffles or free beer to come out. Good communication with the members, and striking up a genuine interest in the chapter as a club and family I believe will bring more people together, as well as help turn your 'quantity' members into 'quality' members.

Let me make clear I do not mean by this that I feel Naxja/SoCal does not pull together when its necessary currently - I know very well that we do, I just think we can do better. :)

The SoCal Chapter catered the 2003 event. Under the leadership of Mil Thornton, we cooked the food and served almost 300 people including a few curious straglers from the nearby senior housing unit.

What would you propse for a menu?

You ask that as if its a simple question. I don't know how many people are involved in the cooking, how many being fed, what kind of resources to cook with, and most importantly budget..

But that said:

I'd probably do up 3 main dishes

Rib Eye's (cooked medium rare, medium, and medium well)
chicken
breast grilled bbq and boneless
the rest bbq
some kind of fish, probably fish taco's - for the anti real meat crowd.

I'd want to do enough veggie dishes that non meat eaters would get by

Corn on the cob (steamed or bbq'd)
Broccoli (steamed)
Mashed potatoes
Coleslaw
Baked beans
Potatoe salad?
Some kind of rice dish

There would need to be something for the kids, hamburgers and hot dogs?

I could cut that list down once I knew more about the resources available and a headcount, but I'd start somewhere around there.

And in a perfect world, Mario from Adventure Trailers would be there serving margaritas as well. :)

BTT.....

Please be sure to read about all of the candidates and cast your vote when the polls open!

Our public lands (mainly USFS and BLM administered) are currently going through major changes. Route Designations are occurring that WILL affect the areas that we recreate. What are your thoughts on this process? Have you participated at all in the process. Do you even care? Route Designation? There’s a trail there, that means I can wheel it, right? Should some of our public lands be set aside for limited/restricted use? Should some be designated as Wilderness areas? Or hell, NO! I’m locked and loaded , Let’s Wheel!

I don't participate as heavily as I wish I did - I watch land use threads here and on pirate, sign the petitions and email in comments on designations as I see fit - although sometime something comes up I don't feel I can stand behind - too extremist one way or the other.

That said, I'm as active with Friends of the Rubicon as I can be this far away, and regularly donate to RFT/FOTR, and the BRC, Cal4Wheel, Corva, and God knows who else that I can't think of at the moment. The Rubicon is very much in the public eye (as far as any trail access goes) and its management sets an excellent example for trails everywhere. Initially I joined up with FOTR to learn more about how the group supporting the trail works - so that can be carried locally - but haven't been in a position (and not particularly proactive about finding that position) to carry that knowledge local yet.

I've attended several of the SBNF adopt-a-trail meetings in the past, both to show support and keep up on the current issues - but since moving to the other side of los angeles haven't made it to any. Another flag I need to pick up and run with..

agreed! thanks John.

Election is only a couple of days away!

Hey Cal, you've got my vote!
