A good day at the salv yard

So yesterday I went to the U-Pull-It yard for the second day in a row...It is about 45 minutes away but it was totally worth going back. I was there on friday to pull some new leafs for my S-10 bastard pack project when i spotted a D44. I was extatic. When i ran to see what time they closed and if i could get them to set the jeep up on tires for me the guy told me they closed at 5:30, even tho their posted hours were 6:00. I was very dissappointed, but ran back and wrenched on it for a while. At 5:20 the guy comes over the PA sys and tells me to pack up cuz he's rollin out. So yeah i had to drive home in rush hour traffic with nothing but the hopes of returning to find my 44 still there the next day. I got back at about 2:00 saturday afternoon and the place was crawling. Luckily nobody there knows what a dana 44 is or looks like cuz it was in the exact same state i left it in. My buddy and i went straight to work and got the thing out in about 45 minutes. The springs attached to the axle (both of which only had 115k mi on them) had small tomken lift blocks on it. I also noticed that the jeep i was working on had a very nice Borla stainless cat-back system. I decided it would be worth trying to pull, and it unbolted and slid right off like it had just been put on the day before. I grabbed a few more things i needed (including a very clean K&N air filter) and threw them in my box. I dragged all the stuff up to the window, expecting to pay $15 for each spring, plus core, $50 for the axle and $25 for the exhaust system. The guy looked at what i had and adds everything up from the price sheet and goes "um....$60 ok?" I shelled out the 20's, dropped my axle core, loaded up the new one and booked outta there with the hugest grin on my face =D The Borla shined up very nicely and after hacking off my 185k mi stock system, it slid right on mine as easy as it came off the donor. I was thrilled to hear how nice it sounds on there. I can't stop revving that engine. the axle is sitting around now waiting for a rebuild...but serriously, who has ever heard of getting a low milage d44 straight out of a chero for $50? I couldn't be happier....... later guys

i'll second moab, our u pull it yards think everyone they have is golden, not the mention that we rarely have many cherokees, let alone ones with little nuggets like that

hey now....no hating is in order here =p
my wheelin buddy is away for the weekend and hasn't seen or heard it yet, but i called him up to bragg. he has a system on his that he recently paid about 260 for and it sounds almost as good. I told him to call me back if he wants to hear what a real jeep sounds like...heh

yeah i really like this yard, they usually have between 10 and 30 cherokees there, and if you're lucky they'll have one or two late models there...i'm still looking for a grill/header panel from a 97+. it's called Shorty and Dave's U-Pull-It and it's in King of Prussia PA. i consider myself very fortunate to live near such a nice graveyard. i also got a dual diaphragm setup there complete for $15

50 dollar D44s are the strongest ones. Wish I had a junkyard like that around.

yeah they're the strongest and the best cuz i can still afford to do gears and disc brakes =D

the most i've seen at ours is probably 5 and i've never seen a 97+, if i did i would rape it quite badly

because you all hate me anyway....

Dude, I hate to tell you this, but that's a metric 40.
They were in very limited numbers, because they were the first of it's kind released in '87 and the project was cut after they had already released several hundred.
It's the housing of a 44 and the internals of a 35 with 30 spider and side gears.
That's why it has "44" on the case.
Why do you think you got it so cheap.
Those are in all of the yards here.

So it is a 44 case, will it take 44 axles, carrier, etc ? Is it a good starting point ? I'm figuring it does not have the gears he wants anyway.

OK, i just went out and looked at the axle more closely...it doesn't say 44 on it anywhere. In the corner tab which i'm guessing you thought it said 44 (upper right tab) it is a big upside down "1" in a raised circle. there is a raised dot after the 1 like a bullet point. on the upper left tab there is a dana <> symbol, as well as on the lower right tab with the letters "NC" inside. on the lower left tab are the numbers "42313" and on the forward facing side of the houseing where the left axle tube comes into the center housing the numbers "339" are cast into it. Those are the only markings I can find....you still sure its a metric 40 or is it a 44? I've never heard of a metric 40, but i would assume you could build it with 44 internals to make it a true 44 if it is in fact a metric? thanks

oh yeah and any axle you pull out of that yard will be $50...i was just marveling that they did not charge me extra for the leaf springs, lift blocks etc. the exhaust prices in the book were also $5 for a muffler and $10 for tailpipe and $5 for exhaust tip. so total cost for it could have been well over $100

Good fishing round here.

I would have probably googled Dana 40 before I typed all of that.
The Dana 40.

Well, some of the stuff jeep did while the french were involved were pretty weird so a hybrid axle would not be out bounds by any stretch of the imagination.

...ummmm, yeah that axle is for a semi? what is that link for? i googled "dana metric 40" and nothing came up. i also searched these forums for the same thing and didn't come up with anything. what exactly are you trying to say by "good fishing round here"? and one more thing...where did you see "44" stapmed in the case in those pictures?
