I feel wierd asking about YJ's on here but....does anyone know if there are any good YJ forums that would help me as much as this site?

I'm gonna be looking at a '93 (I think) to buy. If I do buy it, the XJ will still stick around though as my sister would buy it from me.

So any helpful forums or info about what I should look for specifically when I check this thing out? Weak spots? m ajor problem areas?

Thanks
Dean

Depending on your budget the YJ is OK but not great, they ride terrible, we had one last year. Look around for a TJ, they can be had for pretty much the same price you just have to hunt.
As for areas to check, cross member in rear as well as above the gas tank. If it's a manual it will have an internal slave so you have that to deal with.
The 93 should be fuel injection if I remember my chiltons and haynes, but not sure, ours was an 89 w/a carter pos that I converted to a webber.
Now you get into tops, full and half doors, door surrounds, soft top brackets for OEM vs aftermarket. Check the 4wd, it will have a vac disconnect on the front axle so check to see if it works, if you buy it convert it with the axle kit that takes the vac motor out.
Springs will be flat, thats normal, gives ya more droop :D
Check the frame for rust very closely, especially over the wheel arches. I've seen them so bad I'm surpised the bodys not resting on the tires..
I'd get under it with a creeper, flashlight, face shield and a pokey bar, go from front bumper to rear bumperettes. You can do a new frame but it is a PIA, they cost about $1200+shipping, EVERYTHING ELSE is totally replaceable. Oh, look at the body mounting points and bushings where they are welded to the frame. Thats about all I can think of off hand.

Thanks for all the info Rich. AS far as tops go, its all set, its got a factory hard top in real good shape and a soft top with all new hardware and full doors.

As far as suspension goes on it, it has stock height springs (don't know if they are originals or not) with 2" shackles all around and 31x10.50 BFG Muds.

The frame was one of my main concerns. I've quite a few wranglers, even newer ones, that the frame was completely rotted on. As you know, New England isn't very easy on cars. The frame is the first thing I'm checking, if thats no good I'm not bying it. I'm sure my dad doesnt want to spend a weekend welding in angle iron.

Thank for pointing out the slave being internal. It is a 5 speed so thats kind of a turn off.

The rough ride and practicallity is something Im gonna have to think about. Obviously the Xj is much better in those respects but I've kind of always wanted a SWB Jeep. well, I'll talk to the kid and see when I can check it out and see how much he wants for it. I guess hes waiting on a new Chevy Silverado that he ordered last week so hes still driving it around.

thanks for all the info
Dean
