xj long arm ?

I have a 86 xj I would like to put long arms on but I dont need a whole kit as I already have 8 inches of lift I am currently using rustys upper and lower adj. control arms and dont want his up grade kit as I dont like the arms I have now .What I want to know is can long arms be custom built or would it be a real pain. I know some of you have done it . Any advise before I start cutting and welding ?
