Will a 1998 XJ hood fit a 1996 XJ? I know the part numbers are different but will it work. Is there really any differences?

I think you could use it IF YOU CHANGE THE FRONT CLIP--FENDERS, ETC.

a late hood (in my experience) on an early jeep will net you a 1/4"+ gap at the front edge by the header panel no matter how much you fiddle with the shims and such. other than that everything else should fit just fine.

They are very close however the early years, 84-86 have a different latching mechanism that will need swapping
