XJ Exhaust Manifold mugshots (Is this a knock-off of a Banks Header?)

Here's the basic proceedure:

* If you have a digital camera, take several pictures of wiring, cables and vacuum lines. Anything that you are not sure of remembering exactly how it was before it was taken apart.

*Remove the air intake and filter box.
*Disconnect throttle cable, cruise control cable and transmission cables from throttle body.
*Disconnect wiring from throttle body, fuel rail and intake manifold.
*Unbolt fuel rail and lay it on top of valve cover.
*Remove throttle body from intake and set aside.
*Loosen serpentine belt and unbolt power steering pump. Lay it where the air box normally sets.
*Make sure all wiring and cables are unhooked and out of the way.
*Remove bolts from exhaust manifold to header pipe.
*Remove bolts from head that hold intake and exhaust on.
*Now you should be able to remove them from vehicle.

*Cover the exhaust pipe so nothing falls into it.
*Clean old gasket off of head and put new one in place.
*Install the donut gasket on exhaust output.
*Set the new header or exhaust manifold.
*Start the front and back bolts and the 2 bolts connecting to exhaust pipe.
*Tighten the bolts front and back of manifold finger tight.
*Just start the bolts that hold both intake manifold and exhaust,
*Now set the intake into place behind the washers on these bolts and put in the rest of bolts.
(This is much easier then trying to install them after intake is in place)
*Now install the intake manifold and top bolts.
*Tighten and torque them as best you can.
*I suggest you torque one or 2 with torque wrench and then using a wrench, feel how much it takes to get that amount of torque. Then use your feel to torque them all. There is no way to get at most of them with a torque wrench.

*Install the throttle body and connect the cables and wires to it.
*Install the power steering mount with pump and serpentine belt.
*Reconnect everything else and you are done!.

Good Luck!

Installed the APN exhaust manifold on my 98 XJ a couple weeks ago. So far no complaints at all. I didn't notice any significant improvment in power or mileage but needed to get rid of the manifold leaks. The leaks were bad enough that I think they were melting the rubber in the motor mount. Regardless, the mm I replaced about a year ago was already melted again. I'm no mechanic so it took me about 4 hours of reading Haynes & Chiltons to get the manifold installed and everything back together. The manifold will not hold a magnet (this was asked in an earlier post).

I bascially did what Lloyd has written up, especially the picts. Taking the picts and putting lables on stuff was a big help in getting everything back together. With a few weeks of driving and just over 1,000 miles, I would definitely purchase again.

now does this header sound any different from stock minus the ticking from the cracked one?
I can't tell any big difference in the sound with this exhaust manifold other than the exhaust leaks are gone. When the muffler goes I'll install an aftermarket muffler that has a bit more rumble to it.

Re: I bought it!!!

everyone still happy with this? Not sure how much i care though, i'm gonna get it. I want to be able to go through the drive through and not have to turn the jeep off.

Hell yea! I'm getting one of these too! I might look into the 98+ intake as well. I read somewhere else that the combo gives ~25 rwhp.

will a header from 1991 on fit the 1987-90?

i was looking a the pics, and the one for 87-90 sucks.

I'm ordering this as well, would there be a difference if I ceramic coat it in/out. Or should I just do what Dino did on his site and that's putting a heat barrier between the intake and the manifold?

Interesting reviews. Thinking about ordering one as my stock exhaust manifold has some cracks. Does anybody know the difference between the manifold with the expansion joints versus the one without? A1 Auto parts offers both. Found them on ebay for 59.95 plus shipping. I was told by my local shop that the expansion joints are the way to go as they are less prone to cracking. But does it really make a difference in the long run? My stock manifold lasted 95,000 miles and just started to crack.

I just received mine today. Very fast shipping and well packed, the weld looks good. Going to install this tomorrow and will update on how it performs.

andrew2516: I dont think you should paint the exhaust manifold as the paint will probably smoke up and come off, try ceramic coating it instead (cost quite a bit tho).

I don't know to much about headers/ manifolds...but mine seem to have a weld right where the flange connects to the pipes that looks like it would slightly interfere with the flow through them.

Other than that it looks great and as said before comes with the bracket and bolts for the down pipe

I thought about it and like you said I'm probably not going to paint it.

ok I asked before if the header off of a 91 and later would fit a 89, and the answer was no.

Ok why does it not fit, are the ports in a different location?

or does it bolt up different?

The short answer would be to say it does not directly fit. The EGR system in your 87-90 would have to be deleted which is illegal if you live in an inspection state. You would also have to get the 91+ downpipe so the oxygen sensor could be moved. However, I plan to get one of these for my 90 because I already deleted my EGR system and have a 91 downpipe sitting around. So the answer is unless they changed something from a stock 91 manifold, YES it will fit your 87-90 with light modification.

the intake ports will also need to be fudged. The intake ports on an HO head are higher than those on a renix due to the redesigned head.

Well if it just little things, thats no big deal.
And I do live in a part of Canada that is not very strict on emissions or polution junk, I already have no cat, just a staight pipe in its place. And EGR is no big deal either, since it is dismantled already.

Thanx for the info guys.

Does anyone have an opinion on that eBay auction I posted 5 posts up?
