XJ Build, again.

Damn.

That was an exceptionally well built XJ.

That is a shame.

If insurance doesn't ante up appropriately I would be inclined to bring a civil suit against the driver of the Ram.

Currently dealing with this. Insurance is only willing to pay Actual Cash value, which on the Cherokee is around 6500. They gave me extra points for condition and "Extras". Right now they are offering 7500 for it. I hired an Attorney and have supplied them with all my receipts and mods that were done to it in hopes that we can pump that number up. Haven't heard back from them on another offer yet, so we'll see. My plan right now is to buy the jeep back from the insurance and salvage whatever is worth saving for the next jeep and scrap the rest.

For those with XJs that are worth more than the "Market Value", learn from my situation. Get extra equipment coverage on your auto policy and itemize all add-ons. You will pay more per month, but if I had done that, they would have paid me out the 25k that I was asking for.

Now the hunt begins for a clean, rust free, stock XJ.

Holy crap - that is a serious accident. Glad you are okay. I'm also amazed at how well the "frame" held together.
I was surprised as well. I've always known that the frame stiffeners helped make the jeep more ridged, just never realized how much more ridged it made it.
After seeing the jeep in person and in the daylight it looks like the front bumper hoop hit the flatbed. Which is why the front clip got peeled like a tuna can. The bumper just deflected the hit. Not sure if that is better or not, but one thing is for sure, Both SmittyBilt bumpers are beefy and can take a hit.

Send the insurance company to Davis Autosports for comparison pricing. I think their trail built XJs (like yours) run around $75K. Given Bidenflation that number may have gone up since the last time I saw their offerings.

Dang. That thing is f'ed up. I'm amazed that you are in front of keyboard. Good luck with insurance. I fear this as well if I ever get an accident. Lawyer is the right option.

I am also trying to consult from a online notary service from
this company to cover all aspects, hope for best.
I’m actually dealing with almost the exact same situation right now. My XJ wasn’t quite as far along as yours, but I’d put a ton of time and money into it with quality parts and upgrades that obviously don’t show up in an “Actual Cash Value” estimate. Insurance came back low, and it’s beyond frustrating how little they account for the custom work and overall condition.

Definitely learned the hard way about the importance of documenting everything and getting that extra equipment coverage. Wish I’d known sooner.

That sucks to hear. It's no fun at all to deal with this crap. Good luck, and consider getting an Attorney for all the legal junk.

I have a boat load of updates for the thread - Still dealing with the other guy's insurance, thankfully the attorney is taking care of all that. As far as the silver jeep goes, the insurance paid me out fairly quickly, and I was able to purchase the Jeep back for 300$. Money well spent

I put the Jeep - Now named "The Ex Wife", in the garage and started pulling anything that was worth it. The interior was in perfect shape, so I pulled it all. And I mean All of it. I pulled the entire wiring harness from the jeep, all the hardware, plastic pieces Windows and seats. The Drivers seat was completely busted. It was an electric seat, so all the motors were blown apart and the frame was bent. So now it's a chair in my garage. :)

I posted a bunch of it on marketplace and was able to make a couple hundred just in parts. I also took a stockpile of my own, knowing that another XJ was in my future.
I grabbed all the sensors off the engine, PCM, Engine wiring harness and all the brackets from my ARB compressor, AUXBeam switch panel, and my remote relay panel for my lighting.

Fortunately, the ARB still worked. It was discolored a bit from being sprayed with battery acid, but otherwise it was ok. Same with all the Rock lights. Surprisingly the rock light that was in the passenger wheel well was completely fine. It's a magnetic light, and it was still attached to what was left of the passenger wheel well.

I also pulled all the suspension. Axles, Shocks, Long arms, and the Transmission with the T-Case.

Of all the things I was planning on keeping as a spare, was the engine. It ran. I was actually able to drive the jeep off the trailer and up into the garage. But to my dismay, the engine was unsalvageable. When I got it into the garage, and started taking the jeep apart, I found that there was a sizable hole in the front of the block right above the timing cover. It looks like when the jeep was hit, the A/C compressor took a direct hit, and busted the bracket clean off, taking a chunk of block with it. So the engine was no good.
20250214_053216468_iOS.jpeg

But other than that, everything that was usable was either sold or kept for spares.

I even had a dude come and cut the roof off of it. Apparently he had rolled his XJ and needed a new roof. So he took that and 2 of the doors.

It was quite a sight to see when she was finally hauled off to the scrap yard.

I had been on the search for another Cherokee. And this time, I wanted something that was stock and not trailed. I learned from the last one that I don't want to be undoing someone else's work. I looked at several, but anything that was in the condition that I was looking for was going to cost 8-10k. which was essentially my entire budget. I knew that i had almost everything that I needed to lift the jeep, and get it back to the way my old jeep, but I also knew that I would need some cash to do frame stiffeners, Fenderflares and a rear bumper.

That's when I found this.

20250301_223222013_iOS.jpeg20250301_223228700_iOS.jpeg

Its a 2001 Sport with 230000 on the odometer. Overall, in pretty good condition, ZERO rust. Shes a 2WD cherokee, so you know she's never been off road. I took it for a spin and was happy with the power of a stock XJ with 29" tires on it. haha

I was able to pick this one up for 2500$ Not bad. That leaves me some money to do some upgrades and fix whatever junk I need to.

There are several dents and dings on the doors, and the clear coat is pealing on the roof and on several places around the body, but nothing bad. The only "Major" issue was it needed a new head. When I looked into the oil cap, I could see little tiny green bubbles coming out in the typical place that the 0331 heads crack. But, judging by the way the engine ran, I felt confident with a new head, she'd be good to go.

So that's what I did. I brought her home and immediately ordered a Clearwater head. I also ordered all new gaskets, and seals. I also did a deep dive into all the systems to see if they were up to snuff, and I found that the A/C was leaking, and the PO had capped off the heater core.

20250311_230813232_iOS.jpeg

So I ordered a new heater core, evap core, All New A/C lines and a Dryer. I was tempted to buy a new compressor and condenser, just so the entire system was new, But I held off incase i needed money elsewhere.
20250308_232731955_iOS.jpeg

Head replacement went as planned, and after I swapped in the new head, I did a compression test on all the cylinders. All of the cylinders are around 140ish except for cylinder 1 which is down to 125. But according to the FSM, compression range of 120-150 and all cylinders within 30psi of each other. So, if the FSM says its good, I'm going to run it for now. I would have liked to see it closer to 150, but with 230k on the clock, I'm sure those rings aren't what they used to be. haha. All the cylinders looked pretty good, there was still some crosshatch visible on the walls, and I didn't see anything that worried me So I think this will be a good motor for a while longer. While i was in there, I replaced the water pump, Oil filter adapter O-ring and the thermostat and thermostat housing.

I also replaced the fan shroud ( I was able to buy a Mopar one off rock auto (y) (y) ) and replaced the electric fan because the one that was there didn't have the clips that mount it to the radiator, so I got a new one.

I went through all the vacuum lines and replaced anything that was degraded. This jeep had sat in the heat for its entire life. so everything was very brittle.

Engine mounts were looong past their usefulness, so i replaced those as well.

All in all I'm happy with how it came out.

20250319_002345380_iOS.jpeg

After all that, I vacuumed and charged the a/c, Bled the Radiator and took it for a spin. Engine still has good power, and runs smooth.

And one of the nice things about a stock 2WD Cherokee is the gas milage haha. She averages 19mpg, and gets around 23-24 on the freeway. Not bad at all.

I moved on to the interior.

This one was in pretty good shape overall, but needed some love in the dashboard and carpet areas. I also wanted to add sound deadening material to anywhere that I could to make the interior more comfortable.

So I pulled out the entire interior. I already had the dash out to do the heater and Evap core, so might at well pull everything out right???

20250311_004258700_iOS.jpeg

I added 80 mil Kilmat to every thing that I could. I held off on the rear quarter panels because I know that I'm going to be cutting into them for the Notch Flares, but other than that, I added it everywhere. I even did the roof.

20250310_031015312_iOS.jpeg

I also did the same treatment that my last jeep got. I pulled the carpet out and got after it with the pressure washer, a carpet cleaner, and time. Got it back to almost factory
20250309_235633313_iOS.jpeg

After all that, I went through all the plastics. Anything that the Ex Wife jeep had better, I swapped over.

And that's when I decided to swap dashboards. I had already done a bunch of wiring for my locker and ARB compressor, and did the double din radio mod, and they're both just sitting there.....SO i swapped them. Now I dont have to redo all that junk again. Genius.
I did have to swap over the VIN plate. But nothing a drill and some pop rivets can't handle.

I also put the Trucklite headlights back in. And yes, those are both from the Ex Wife. and both of them still work perfectly. The passenger one has a hole in the outer glass, so well see how long it can last with it open to the elements. Trucklite doesn't make this light anymore, So buying a new one was hard to find and I didn't want to buy a new set when these work fine. I have since found one that someone was selling on Ebay that I bought, but for now I'll run the cracked one till it dies. Nice little tribute to the old Jeep.

20250304_002558080_iOS.jpeg

Nice little preview of things to come.

Great to see you are back in the game.

Definitely worth it to buy the old one back from insurance.

So, I have some updates for the Xj.
I've been working on an Interior light mod for the last several weeks and finally got it wrapped up about a week ago. It was a pretty involved project and required a lot of research and testing to get it to work, but I got it all wrapped up and I was really happy with the way it came out. I integrated a dome light dimmer module that had a time delay and then would dim the lights out after about 10 seconds or so. I also integrated my rock lights into that system, so when the doors opened or you unlocked the Jeep the rock lights would come on as well. I had all the intentions of doing a write up for all of you.
However, on Jan 26th, I was involved in a rear end accident on my way home from work at around 5am in the morning. I was slowing down to take a freeway interchange exit and a guy in a Ram 1500 smashed into me doing 80+ mph. The impact launched the jeep forward and into a flat bed truck that was in front of me. Needless to say the jeep sustained a lot of damage. The whole front end was pealed like a tuna can and destroyed the entire left side of the engine compartment. The back end faired pretty well considering what happened, the SmittyBilt bumper took the brunt of the impact and is bent in. Definitely no usable, but still took it like a champ. The rear hatch is caved in and destroyed, and there are some crinkles in the left and right quarter panels. So I'm assuming that the frame is tweaked. All this to say that the jeep is definitely and total loss. The suspension should still be salvageable, as well as the front bumper and winch. The interior is still intact for the most part, My drivers seat broke from the initial impact, but the rest is still in good condition.

Still don't know what the insurance is going to pay for the jeep, considering its a 24yo jeep with a 165k miles on it. I'm hopeful that it will shake out in my favor, but only time will tell. All I can say is I'm grateful I walked away from this accident mostly uninjured.

I'm still planning on posting the interior lighting mod so stay tuned for that. Eventually there will be another Cherokee sitting in my driveway, but for now, I just have to deal with the reality that this Jeep is gone.

Couple things I do chuckle about though, On the left side wheel well, my rock light are the Morimoto Magnetic rock lights. That little guy is still holding on even though the rest of the wheel well is tore to bits. Also, the Truck Light head light took a direct hit and is, for the most part, still in one piece. The outer glass has a crack and a small piece missing, but it looks like it might still work. i actually found it on the ground about 10 feet away from the jeep after the accident happened. That should speak to the quality of those headlights.

And another interesting note, The frame on the front did not crinkle even though it took a pretty sizable hit. It seems as though the frame stiffeners definitely held the the jeep together on both ends.
I'd say the bumpers and frame stiffeners saved your life. I would definitely invest in them again for your next build.

On your wrecked XJ, you replaced the rear spring hangers and mounts with some significant upgrades. How mush did they raise the Jeep, if at all? I've seen different variants of this mod, but really liked yours.

How did you like the Core 4x4 Long Arm kit? I have been looking at this kit for a while and really need to bite the bullet and get it ordered. I have their short arms and adjustable shackles and like the quality of both.

Any fitment issues over the stiffeners? Any clearance issues with the driver side upper arm and the 2000-2001 dual precat exhaust? Seems like it would be tight up in there if you fully stuff the driver tire.

I used the Ruffstuff rear shackle relocation kit. It's a very nice kit, and allows you to adjust your shackle angle for a better ride. As for the height difference, IIRC the jeep dropped a little due to the shallower shackle angle. The replacement box sits right in the same spot as the factory location but just has multiple holes that you can mount the shackle to now. It's a good kit that I definitely recommend

So far I've been happy with the setup. Their kit is well made, and when I talked with them on the phone about some install questions they were very helpful.

So, I've installed mine twice now. It requires some cutting for sure. The pinch seam on the frame needs to be trimmed back to the crossmember to clear the upper arm. That's not a huge deal. On the first jeep, the factory bolt holes for the crossmember lined up perfectly to the new Core4x4 crossmember. On Pearl the passenger side the control arm mount was not sitting flush to the frame, and the bolt holes did not match up. This was because of my frame stiffeners, so i had to drill out the holes about 2-3 sizes larger to accommodate the misalignment. Not sure why this happened on the second jeep, since the first one had the same kit, and same frame stiffeners. Maybe I didn't get these ones as Flush as the last ones? Dunno 🤷‍♂️ I will say, Drilling the 5/8" hole for the through bolt is a PITA going through the frame stiffeners and the frame. Get a new sharp drill bit, and a good drill.

As for the exhaust, yes, the stupid flange on the downpipe hits the driveline when you flex. Its a very close fit. On the first jeep, I just left it and ended up breaking the grease zerk off my driveline, and got some love bites on it. On the new jeep, I cut the corner off the flange and added a couple tack welds
Otherwise the kit has been a good long arm kit. Big Johnny Joins and grease zerks on everything.
