I have a line on an '89 XJ parts only with a NP242 Xfer case. Are there any advantage to replacing my NP231 with this? I like the Selec Trac 4WDHI option.
What is the ratio of the 4LO in the NP242?
Also I noticed XJ at one time used the NP228 and the NP229. Apart from the SYE that these two carried, what other advantages would they have over the NP231 and 242?

TIA. Patrick

Low range ratio is the same in both 242 & 231 (2.72:1)

That 89 case likely was behind a 21 spline AW4 tranny, (so you'd need to swap input gears to match your 94 23 spl) If your heart's set on that 4 high full time mode, best to find one out of a 91+ (some say 90+) that is splined to mate. 23 Spline stayed with the XJ all the way to the end, but at some point in the mid 90s, the speedo output went from a cable/gear/quill to a magnetic trigger and plug-in for OBDII

I had crappy performance out of the 242 in my 89 (on & off 4wd in any mode, not-healthy sounding popping noises in 4H-FT when turning) but the one in Momma's 88 Limited works fine & quietly.

I dunno If I trust them yet, but 1 Ton XJ (Sean R) wheels the crap out of his and it has held up fine. It's about the only thing left original on his 88.

Johann in Raleigh NC had a 23 spline 231 (92 IIRC) that he wanted to part with, If you need a spare case maybe PM him and see if it's still available?

IIRC the 229 was the full-time case behind the mopar 904 auto in 2.8V6 86- XJs and the 228 was a part time case for FS Jeeps in the 80s. The early part-time case in the XJ was NP207, and was 21 spline input. In all cases LOL, don't go there for your 94.

242 has a center diff in it,so all wheeel drive all the time, miliege suffers and more rotating stuff,I run a 242 in mine and take the front shaft off when just driving around town, saves the weird noises I get from it with the locker in the front I run....................

I personally had nothing but bad luck with the 231. I never used a 242 but have a buddy running 37 boggers with it. Check out nvg's sight it gives you the torgue specs on there t-cases.
I have a 231 I just pulled out in favor of a 241, if anyones interested.
