Looking to regear my rig.

Need to start with a Ford Ranger 8.8 axle w/ disc brakes. Would be perf. if it has a locker!

Ranger with disc is a special conversion and only 28 spline.

What you want is a Explorer 8.8. Comes with disc and 31spline.

But you would save $ overall and get what I feel is a better axle with a XJ D44.

ok / open to a dana 44.... (those have disc brakes too?)

Not stock no.

But a locker is 10-30% less to buy/install.
Gears are 10-20% less.
There is no need for removing of all axle tube bracketry and installing/welding on correctly spring perches and shock mounts.
The drums are perfectly fine.
And the yoke is a direct fit with likely the same driveshaft. No need for special yoke adapters and a shorter shaft.

A f8.8 only "advantage" is a very minimal shaft increase (30 spline to 31 spline). And slightly larger Ring gear. Both of which are non issues on a D44, so really are Moot comparisons.

People say a F8.8 is much easier to find. Maybe a slight bit around southern cali. But at only a 100-200$ increase for a D44 that is a Direct bolt in. And a regear with a selectable locker cost you 200-400$ less, well its a wash in cost.

the ad right next to yours is an 8.8 setup for an xj with 4.56's..
