I'm looking to replace my stock axles with DANA 44s on my XJ. I know a front would be a custom job but if anyone has a rear I'm willing to pay good money for one set up for an XJ. I'm looking for one geared at 4.10, with a locker, and disk brakes but I'll take what I can get.:dunno:
You don't need a custom d44. The TJ rubicon came with a d44 front that will bolt directly up to your XJ. The issue will be with finding one. Go over to jeepforum.com and post a thread in the TJ forum that you are looking for a Rubi front D44. There are a few in their for sale. The TJ guys when they go with 37's+ tend to go with the d60's, etc. There were a couple over at Scotty's jeep salvage yard a year or so ago, but his prices were rather horrible. You could also put up a craigslist "wanted" add for a TJ rubi front. A friend of mine was looking for a JK d44 front and did the wanted add and a JK guy contacted him wanting $600. Complete axle rotor to rotor. Came with the factory locker and 4.10 gears. Pretty sweat deal. He didn't buy because he thought he could get a better deal. I'm pretty sure he's slightly retarted.
arent they only 27 spline though? same axle shafts as a d30. i think a waggy is supposed to be a bit better and cheaper. no locker or 4.10's stock though.

They do have the same outers as the d30 which is 27spline. that part sucks. The good is the beefier d44 3rd member, larger ring and pinon, locker, and 4.10s. The swap is really only worth it if you can find a good deal on one.
So the breakage potential is still the same compared to the 30? I saw a guy rip off his ball joints @ KOH clean off while backing out of a trail he had no business being on.
