hey all,
I'm a fairly new XJ owner and just learning (by doing) how to repair my rig.
Now my flex plate is haveing issues, so I might as well change the oil, replace a oil pump, replace rear main seal, oil filter and rings, and change the engine mount..........hmmmm, since I live in western MI on the shore of lake Michigan, one of you guys live close by with a heated work area and plenty of knowlege to help me. I'll spring for food a drinks..... pm me ( i still got to buy the parts)

I know, I was just thinking off the top of my head what could be done while down there. I have to get the flex plate fixed and the main seal needs work. But I dont have any experiance in those items. zright now I'm researching and learning what I can. What I for see;

1. 2000 cherokee, I'll need to move the tranny enough to access the flex plate ( 6 to 8 inch's, maybe even dropping it).

2. If I'm doing that then removing the oil pan should be do able ( change oil, new oil pan seal).

3. If I drop the oil pan, might as well replace the rear main seal, I have a slight leak there.

4. If I drop the oil pan and changethe oil then I need to change the filter and the O-rings in the adapter are leaking - change the rings.

5. The oil pump was just an option, I have about 30psi while running.

6. Engine mount also an option, I still have the original mounts and they have seen better days (I can place the tip of my finger in between the metal of the mount and the rubber- is this bad? I have no idea).

Many things on my list, really depends on what I can buy/get, wheather, and time to do it. Also I have a crack on the intake manifold (on the webbing (lack of better word) between ports). I'm new to wrenching on my own rig and I learn by reading the forums and hands on, so I'm trying to get my rig fixed before winterfest.....sorry rambbeling

So your a new guy looking for about 2500 dollars worth of work done for the price of a newb hand, food, and drinks?

Just some help, if no help then I do it myself. Just may take longer but the end results will be the same. Not hard stuff just new to it. But thanks for the reply.

I am familiar with everything but the flex plate and replacing the rings.

THe rear main and stuff it pretty easy to do. And can be done on your own with out help.

I know I did mine lol one of the first things I did to my heep was Rear main and OIl pump.

The motor threw a rod, rob! Most of that wont need to be done now.......

Looked at an engine today. not to bad. Owner said it leaked some oil at the rear main, so I'll change that. I have a question though. My engine is a 2000 and the new engine is from a 96. The exhaust headers are different right? can I just use the header from the 96?

also the 96 engine has a distributer and my 200 cherokee doesn't. Is it just a matter of swapping the electronics and sensors over to make the 96 engine work in my jeep?

pretty much.

You'll probably have to swap valve covers so you can mount the coil packs.

I think the coil packs mount to the head if I'm not mistaken. All valve covers should be interchangeable.

you might be right on that. I don't know for sure. It would have made sense to mount them to the cover.

WTF do I know, I'm still using 25 year old FI.

Another year and I get to register the MJ as a historical vehicle in OH.

Here's the best I can do at the moment.

You can kind of see in this pic that the coil packs are just lower than the valve cover. They mount with three or four long 13mm bolts in the head.

bm 'coil packs arent cheap to replace :( ' yohn

so some sort of bracket needs to be made to hold them. Some random sheetmetal shou'dn't be hard to do.

that would be hilarious to see

so the only reason to change the head would be for the mounting of the coil packs? If thats the only reason (barring any damage) then I'll keep the head on the "96" and just fab some sort of braket. Then just switch all the other electric stuff and the intake and exhaust.

Things got put a little on hold, couldn't line up a truck to get the engine untill Mon. I am yhinking of keeping the ole engine and maybe turn it in to a project (depending on the damage from the rod). To check for damage would I take the whole engine to a shop? Just the block? I have no idea.
