I want to put gears in my xj, but dont want to rev too high on the freeway. I also don't want to get a big decrease in gas mialage. I will be running 32x11.50. I have 3.55's right now and want to go to 3.73's maybe. Our 4.10 to low and would 3.73's make a big differance.
thanks

x2. I ran 3.73's for a couple of years and was happy with them, but it was mostly highway, with a 5 spd, and a 4.6 stroker, which made all the difference in the world. With and auto and a 4.0, go with 4.10's and you won't be sorry.

if your set and stone on 31/ 32's and your never going to have the urge to go to 33's or even 35's in the future...i'd say get 4.10's but don't waster your money on 3.73...hha...my buddy learned it the hard way

Im running 31x10.5s and i have 4.10s and its pretty nice. highway traveling was a conern of mine becuz i was jumping from 3.07 right up to 4.11 but i still can do 100KM at about 2,100 RPM in 5th gear...Doesnt really compare to my 160km in 4th with 3.07s but it kicks some ass for Daily driving and wheelin.

go with 4.56s

How hard do you work for your Jeep mod money? If it's easy to come by, go with 4:10's. If you work hard for it, your money will be better spent with 4:56 gears......and your mileage will be better that with 32's because you'll be operating in the power range on the freeway.
Take it from someone who started out with stock 3:07's then to 3:73's, 4:10's and 4:56 gears over the last 10 years with various lift and tire combo's.

Forget the "recommended gearing" charts, they fail to factor in the increased wind resistance that comes from lifting a box 5-6" higher, wider tires with increased rolling resistance, added weight from HD bumpers, winches, trail gear, etc.

If you regear your rig to operate in the 2600-2900 rpm range when cruising at 65-75mph, you will get much better mileage (3-5 mpg better) than if you gear it to turn 2200 rpms at freeway speeds.

Good luck with your choice.
