WJ Transfercase Question

Hoping someone can help me out here. I have a chance to purchase a family members '04 WJ, 4.0L with Quadra-Trac. The rear axle let loose on the expressway at speed. The plan was to swap out the rear end, but someone asked if I thought the t-case would be ok. I'm not familiar with the full time NV247 case though, so I honestly don't know myself. Should I consider a t-case in my worse case scenario before I make him an offer on it? Any insight would be appreciated. Thanks.

I would swap out the t-case for one with 2wd capability.

Thanks for the input. I'm going out to look at it tonight. Talking to him last night, I think he's a bit high on what he wants out of it. Is it just me (I'm a cheap bastard) or does $2k sound a little excessive? I gave him what I thought was a solid offer of $1500. The dealership offered him $300 as it stands in trade or a starting estimate of $1600 to repair, but they haven't opened the axle up yet.

Other details: '04 Laredo Special Edition, 114k, leather seats, moon roof, p/w, p/l, heated seats, multi cd changer.

Needs: valve cover gasket, shocks, sun visor, power seat motor, rear axle and who knows what else.

As much as I want to keep it (I really am tempted), I'm buying it to flip.

I don't know about the 247 but if it's anything like the 249 full time case I would absolutely consider replacing it. the 249 has a viscous coupler inside of it instead of chains and gears, when they go out the part itself is $400+ from the dealer.

not sure if the 247 uses this though, but I would include swapping the case as part of a worst case scenario regardless. good luck if it's clean you could get a good deal.

Thanks, that's kind of what I was thinking. Took a look at it and pulled the trigger at his asking price. Wish I could of gotten it cheaper but it's a looker.

I already picked up an axle for $40. The rear end was toast and would of needed spiders, carrier, ring and pinion to start with. Unfortunately, it appears the front axle was taken out as well. I haven't pulled the cover yet, but I have a sneaking suspicion it stripped teeth. I'm going to tackle the rear, then open the front and go from there. I figure if I get buried too deep, I'll keep it as a driver.
