Bet you folks thought I forgot about this project. Not a chance. I've been busy with other stuff and haven't the time to get the heep out on a trail before heading out to Moab. I really wanted to flex the new longarms to make sure nothing was going to bind-up. A wheelin' partner (Scott) was kind enough to let me to mount his rig this afternoon.
Passenger side up first...
Very nice Frank, hmmm, I wonder where you got all the copper and fittings for the oba project. Never new you were a hvac guy. Good job. It's so nice seeing new ideas, well new to me, I've never seen the tube bumpers welded to the body on a cherokee before, I really like it. Definately on my list. I would like to know where you got the measurements for the longarms. I would like to make a set also but not sure where to start. Did you just go by the knuckle angle or what? Is there a secret to welding thicker metal to the thin stuff, what were your settings? Sorry for all the q's but good stuff. Did you cut out the rockers because of rust or some other reason? I'm subscribing to this one, keep em coming!
These are my second set of longarms. I measured, cut, and welded as I went along. I built enough adjustability into the arms (upper and lower) to allow for proper axle positioning and caster adjustment.
Secert to welding thin body panels to 16ga steel? I wish i knew. I had a bitch of a time! i turned the welder to the coldest setting and extremely slow speed and I still managed to burn through the body. The welds look like crap up close. When i get back from Moab I'm going to spend some quality time with the heep and a grinder. I know I can do better.
Removing the old sliders and installing the new rocker-sliders gave me 2" of additional clearance.
very impressed overall, but one specific question about the rock rails. my rockers are rusted out big time and i was just going to cut them out completely as you did and make almost exactly what you did, so seeing as how you've already done it, what size square tubing did you put in in place of the rocker, and where'd you weld it to? can it take a hit? good luck and keep us updated!
what size tubing did you use for your longarms? any chance you have a pic of the whole assembly off of the jeep? I'm mainly interested in what you did for the crossmember/skid...
Yes of course thats what I meant FrankZ, not tube bumpers but fenders, I really like that idea, even though it looks a little topless jeepish, lol! Good work.
Lost a cam lobe on the motor and it crapped out 10 miles north of Moab last Sunday. Already have the motor out and torn down. Unfortunetly The remainder of the Winter Project has become the "If at all possible" project. Oh well....stuff occurs.
The heep performed beautifully the entire week though and we enjoyed our best vacation ever!
