Winch selection help

If you can fit it, I think the 8274 is the best quality and design available. I have had an 8274, an xd9000i, and have used a superwinch 9000. All of them worked great, but the 8274 was fastest. The superwinch seemed beefier than the xd9000i, and I never stalled it, but it was slower. Can't go wrong with any of your choices, though.

this is the winch that has saved my ass more times than i can count deep mud to steep hills...and cheep too.
 
My buddy has the m8000 on his rubicon. It has saved the day enough to pay for its self. He one pulled a completely sunken xj out of a local swimming hole with it. Too bad I was about 15 mins too late to see this:bawl:. Stupid kids doing 30mph down a creek bed:doh:
 
Thanks for all of the replies. I can't order anything untill friday but so far the Superwinch sounds realy good. From searching I can't find much bad about it.

I'm not sure if I can mount the 8274, I have heard that it is "the best" from other threads by different people. The bumper I'm using has plenty or room to mount but I'm guessing that the holes won't line up with the predrilled holes.
Is that the only difference or is it the way that the winch is clocked that makes it different?
 
i have a tmax ew9000. cheap winch, powerful but ive had a good amount of problems with it. Seems to be poorly built, i had frame mounts crack on it. Id stay away from them, the other two you mentioned ive heard bad about. DEFINITLY go for the warn M8000, if i could do it again I would

I'd say your mounting surface is likely not level if your cracking the mounts. Most winches would do the same if they're not mounted on a flat surface.

The 8274 mounts with the bolts going thru the front of the winch, not the bottom like most of the others. The 8274 is a whopper of a winch, excellent in all ways, except size and weight. The 8274 will block a big portion of the grill and is very tall. So tall that you can see the solenoids sticking up above the hood. I've only seen a few people are using this winch on a Cherokee (Georgia Mike is one I know of). It is also very heavy.

I purchased a Superwinch EP9.0 from DetoursUSA when I ordered the Backbone. I haven't received it yet so I can't comment on how well it works but Mark did a good job selling it to me. I have an 8274-50 on a Scout II but to build a mounting system and issues with size, I decided to try the EP9.0.
 
You can catch the smittybuilts on sale from time to time for $269 free shipping. $30 more for a lifetime, no questions asked warranty... at 4 wheel parts.

IMO... thats hard to pass up.
 
I bought a new in the box Warn M8000 for $450 plus $50 shipping about 3 months ago on Ebay. I tried bidding for about a week but the prices would go up and I finally found the "buy now" priced one for $450.

I haven't had a problem with my EW-9000. I was sold on it when I watched Cal winch djjosh a good half a mile up Clawhammer in Johnson Valley when Josh's fuel pump went. He abused the crap out of the EW-9000 that day. I picked up the summit branded one for $468 at my door step. http://winchtest.com had info on the warns. Mainly the cable would snap before it reached breaking strength. The tests were done by an independent lab, but paid for by mile marker so YMMV. I'm throwing 3/8" synthetic line on mine.

Just wanted everyone to know that YOU DO NOT EVER BUY ONE OF these things for your trailer, let alone for a recovery never never ever.
your better off using a come-a-long. These are only good for a small boat being pulled onto a trailer in the water.

I got one for pulling cherokees up onto my trailer I go out and purchase cherokees for parts or fix, seen the winch and thought it would be an inexpensive winch with 6000 lbs rolling weight... yea right more like 500 lbs rolling weight.

I went with the Superwinch Epi9000. It was a toss up between that and the summit "T-Max" but I couldn't find anything negative about the SW.
The only thing I don't like about my selection is the reduced airflow to the radiator and the weight at 114LBs. Other than that, it was the fastest line speed and the least amp drawl of all that I researched. I think for the price, it is a great winch.
