why do some ppl beat their rigs so much?

I've always tried to keep both Jeeps looking good. I feel that still being in HS, and having a car payment, I work too damn hard for my Jeep, and i want to keep it looking nice, that way if someday i'm forced to sell it, that's less work that I have to do inorder to get some money back out of it. Now don't get me wrong, I still take it off road (not hardcore mud boggin, rock crawlin, desert runnin stuff), but some pretty decent mud holes and challenges that I've seen several yota's and other "4x4's" get stuck in pretty easily, and every time, both Jeeps (1 XJ and 1 KJ) have amazed me...both again, bone stock, but they're both very capeable even in stock form.

I also get ragged on alot by people I go to school with saying "why do you wash your Jeep so much???" "Your Jeep looks too shiney"...blahh blahh blahh. But these are also the kids who act like they're about 8 years old, always goofin off, never take anything seriously, and just spend mommy and daddy's money like its goin out of style, so i don't really care about their opinion anyways. And I can't wait to see them again in 10 years or so, when they're struggling to make a living, or paying out the wazoo for simple maint. on anything, be it house, car, or whatever, that they could have learned now, had they been a bit more mature.

Getting back on topic, I always get comments when I go places (other than school) to the tune of "thats a nice lookin Cherokee you got there young man" or "Thats a good lookin Liberty"...and its usually from older people....I don't know if they're just shocked to see a teenager who actually gives a crap or what.

About a month of go some dude backed into the front of my Jeep and did about $300 in damage to the front bumper....it wasn't as bad as the price suggested...but I about flipped on the guy...even though he agreed to pay for it and everything, and eventually did. Everybody I talked to said "ohh its not that bad, I'd just leave it". Well, going back to what i said earlier, I work way too hard to afford this thing, and to have somebody come along and mess it up, just really got under my skin. And I could see how it happened, it was a tight parking lot and all, and accidents do happen, but thats another topic. Now, had I done the damage myself, say on a trail or somethin, yeah i'd live with it...because the damage was done by ME....and I'd probably have some great memories as to how it happened.

In short, I believe as long as your Happy with your Jeep, who cares what it looks like. Its your Jeep, and if you want to keep it clean and lookin good, go right ahead. Or if you're the type who want to jack it up and beat the crap out of it, go right ahead, as long as your havin fun. I know i'm very happy with my Jeep and I enjoy taking care of it. Ans yes, I do check the oil, and very regurarly. I change it myself, and I'm starting to do alot of the other work on it myself....its still a learning experience.

sounds like a pretty good description of yourself opie

If you're going to get all :rattle: about hitting your rig on some rocks, and getting some uber-cool rock flames, then wheeling isn't for you. I understand that when you first have it, you have to keep it really clean and whatever, but you get to a point where you realize that your drivetrain is more important than the sheet metal. That's why I don't have rocker guards, but I do have a tank skid and a tcase skid coming soon. There aren't enough rocks in Texas to really justify any of that, but who knows what could happen, and when I head to Moab, I can't risk slamming the tcase just when I'm starting to have a good time.

rock rails are a must though. not only will they let you put your doors back on, or open and shut them for that matter, they are great for pivoting and jacking and all that mess.

Pivoting on a rock is my number one use for rails.
Well, maybe I use them to jack with more than I use them for pivoting. :laugh3:

got any pics of that?

i can't believe this thread got over 1000 page views and nearly 100 responses. so far.

naxja.....

run on sentence :laugh3: I would rather show off the damage that I got on a tough trail that had a tree that I rubbed the whole side of my jeep on or show off the huge dent in the fender when I used it as a pivot point to get around a rock high enough to hit it and than take my wife out on a date in it than take her out in your nice xj that you think you wheel. So would my wife.

you can wheel without damage and you can damage without wheeling...I have plenty of fun, but have only damaged my vehicles 3 times off road. Rocker panel on my Tracker cuz the hump I drove over dropped off on the one side. Busted the bolts holding my grille guard onto the front of my Trooper, and landed on my front bumper with the Cherokee. All minor stuff.

i will add my 2 cents, i love jeeps in any condition shiny or beat. if they are shiny i figure that the driver is mostly using it as a dd or it sees light wheeling.if its beat up its a trail rig and is not driven daily if it is thats just a testament to what it can do and go through and still be a running and driveable rig. to each there own. i paid 200.00 bucks for mine in a bad state of repair, needs major mechanical work not beat up as far as body goes, but when i get it togther and driveable im going to wheel it .and im not going to wheel with the thought of bashing it up, but if it gets smacked up ill fix what has to be fixed and the rest will be my testament as to what my jeep can do and survive through. all in all if every one drove arround in a xj that was shiny and clean and looked great it would be kinda boring to have one. i like to see xj that are beat that just shows me that they are used and the guy driving it has had allot of fun with it.keep yours shiny and stright fly your flag the way you want, nobody is going to care about it when there out wheeling there own.besides if yours is in straight and in good condition it just means that when you decide to get rid of it there will be another good project for some one like me to buy.
