who is running ram assist steering?

You know the answer: URF. About to do Jes's.

I have to go to PNP or J&W to get another box. I don't think it's worth rebuiling mine with the abuse it's seen.

Shouldn'y you be changing diapars about now?????

depending on what ram you used you may want to think about modifying your pump to handle the extra flow. i have a 3/4" (i beleive) and whippin the wheel like you might to gain traction while climbing is a pain it kinda resists. i have heard that you can take the output fitting off on the pump. then remove the next fitting and there is a bronz piece in there that the fluid flows thru. that is fairly restrictive and you can open this up with a drill and the resistance problem will go away. (hearsay)

I'm hoping to put mine on this weekend. I have everything but the hoses, which I'll have made up tomorrow afternoon. I have an AGR pump which is what AGR uses on their ram assist kit, so I'm hoping I won't need to bump the pump up at all. I'm using a 1.5" ram because I don't want to loose any control at speed.

I don't know how most are determining the length of the ram. I heard you just take it apart and add something as a spacer. I got my ram from Tommy Lee, and they made it the length that I wanted, so the throw should be perfect.

The other thing is fitting in in there, but mine looks like it should fit fine. The frame side track bar mount might hit the tab on the tie rod if the suspension stuffs hard with the wheels turned hard to the left, but that might not even be an issue.

If your box is shot, why not go full hydro?
Billy

it cost prolly 3 times as much as assist and not all full hydro systems allow turning when the engine dies leaving you steeringless on the street.

no full hydro. Again, my goal for 06 is to leave trailer queen status. With the overt pussification of the Rubicon going on, I am damn tempted to part my rig and build another with 31s and open diffs. Full hydro is not an attractive option right now.

I've seen the video.
That's a big ram. :worship:

Can't believe no one picked up on that one.

you can run ram assist and be street legal but full hydro isn't.
I went the Red neckTexas Ram route. One advice....once you put the modified box (or modify yours') you better go ahead and hook up the hoses and start running the full system. I put the modified box on just before going to Moab and ran outa time before doing the rest. I blew out the seals on the modded box withing 100 miles.

Why is that?
Isn't the only box mod drilling/tapping the holes?

my "theory" is that the increase in pressure was too much for the seal around the main shaft without the ram and hoses to bled off part of it. Just my idea, mind you, but the dang thing blew out very shortly. Any other ideas?

I'm on my third steering box that has been drilled and tapped for the hydro fittings, and never got around to putting the ram on. This has been over the course of about three years, I just broke two of the boxes....bolt tab ears and sector shaft. Never had any problem with leaks, seals, or performance on these modified boxes.

Dan, I think the work on the box was probably faulty. Drilling the holes and closing them off with a fitting wouldn't change anything in the box.

Oh, did you do the pump mod? (increasing the pressure)
That might contribute.
As for the box, just drilling and tapping (and then plugging) the holes shouldn't do anything.
Could also just have been a seal installed wrong.
