Which rear bumper / tire carrier?

Most of the pics on the Detours site are early model. I'll have to take some pics now that I have mine all mounted up on my '99. I'll get you some close ups of the sides as well.

Heres mine, JCR matches the lines great.. I still have to put on the gas can and jack

Here are the pics of the Detours USA Slimline I promised. Keep in mind I had Mark customize my end caps just a bit. He can cut them to fit early factory flares, late factory flares, Bushwackers, trimmed fenders, or anything else you want. I wanted to keep my factory flares but was having minor rubbing issues at the bottom corner of the trailing edge of the wheel well, so I had him cut them at an angle to match a factory flare at the top and a trimmed fender at the bottom:

I'm sure he could make it that way, but due to the short length of the swingarm I don't think you'd be able to get your liftgate open. With my 33" tire the liftgate just clears as it is.

The Detours design has the pivot and latch both integrated into the d-ring mounts which serves (at least) two purposes. First, these are the strongest and most secure mounting points as they are directly tied into the bumper mounts and "frame rails" on the backside of the bumper. Second, your reverse lights don't get blocked by the Detours pivot like they do on the designs which have the pivot mounted on the end of the bumper. Look closely at all the other pics in this thread (so far) and you will notice the passenger side reverse light is totally obscured.

Build your own. That's what I did.

Ah yes, someone had to provide the ol' "build your own" reply. :banghead:

If we had the ability (or desire) to build our own, we wouldn't be discussing this topic in the first place. Thanks for the suggestion though...

You are right, I should have said "Ahh yes, another which rear bumper should I buy? thread." Casue no one has ever discussed rear bumper options on the board here ever before.

I realize the OP was looking to buy one since he says he doesn't have good fab skills. My rear bumper was my first fab project though. It's a good place to start if you want to learn, so my suggestion was mearly that you CAN do it yourself and this is what I did. It fulfills all of his criteria, except that I did it myself, saved some money and learned how to weld/fabricate in the process. Which I guess in your mind is a bad thing. Sorry to have made such an awful suggestion.

Well then I guess I should have just used the old standby of "learn how to search" instead of providing him with a reply to his question. I believe there are nearly as many threads on here asking for designs and pictures of home-built bumpers as there are asking for advice on which bumper to buy. I'm sure one of those OP's would love to see your pics, maybe with a little more detail showing mounting points, latch, pivot, etc.

Now you're just putting words in my mouth. I'd love to take a welding class and learn some metal fabrication skills. It would really make a lot of XJ upgrade projects much easier. So just to set the record straight, in my mind, it's a great thing... just not the answer to his question.

:peace:
