Which Power Steering Pump do you recommend?

Is that a factory drop-in? Any modifications required? What brand did you go with? Thanks for posting.

Oops, I just realized you are asking about the pump and not the box. I used the 99' durango steering box with factory pump resevoir....sorry about that

Ha ha, no problem! :D I need a replacement box too!

I run 31's (265/75R16, so closer to 31.5") and a stock pump (now with a filter and cooler) and honestly can't imagine wanting any more hydraulic assistance at this point. Plenty of power for what I've subjected it to.

As others have stated, I went through three pumps from Advance (I believe A-1 Cardone), all of which leaked within the first 10 minutes of run time. Ponied up a few more bucks for a pump from NAPA and it's been good as new ever since. Pretty freaking quiet too - even under duress it sounds like a healthy pump.

Never buying moving parts from Advance or AutoZone again.

Thanks for the info. What brand of cooler did you go with?

Ive been through the same thing pal. Ive started using napa pumps because i went through 4 A-1 cardone pumps before switching.

HOLY CRAP my A1 Cardone has leaked since I installed it 2 yrs ago and just recently on a 1,000 mile trip it is leaking worse.
I remmember back in the 80s A-1 cardone was good stuff. Fixing to go get my $$ back and swap in a durango box. I hate leaks :twak:

EDIT: I have a bad PS BOX not pump the pump is fine.

After numerous PS failures, from A1-Cardone, Advance and even Napa, I bought a new PSC pump. It has been running smoothly and quietly since 2007.
Also gave up a couple years ago on poorly rebuilt steering boxes, after two rebuilt failures, and got a new PSC big-bore box. It is a very powerful combination and worth every penny, on a rig with bigger tires.
To keep the pump and box happy, an inline filter and external oil cooler(old trans filter) were added.

Unfortunately PSC doesn't make a steering pump for a 2000 XJ.

I replaced the pump on my 96 with a brand new pump from rockauto (can't remember the brand) and even with shipping it was cheaper than any of the parts store rebuilt pumps and has been working flawlessly.

Checking Rock Auto's and Napa's website, all they sell are remanufactured PS pumps. Same goes for power steering boxes. No wonder so many have recurring power steering problems.
Our travels can take us far away from paved roads, I want the most dependable new parts available, not some POS, poorly repaired part.
One $2000 towing job, from the back country of Canyonlands or Death Valley, will buy a lot of new parts.

Are you sure?
I bought it several months before installing it and they didn't require a core so I assumed it was new (been a while).
Pump looked brand new, not your typical parts store rebuilt.....been great for close to a year now and I run aired down 33s when off road so it's been worked more than just a street driven vehicle....I did have to reuse my reservoir though.

I called PSC to verify if the PSC Motorsports 97-06 Jeep 4.0 TJ High Performance Replacement Pump w/o reservoir (PSC-SP1205) fit the 2000/2001 XJ, and they said "YES". I'm glad that lazyxj posted up. Anyway, I went ahead and ordered the pump with the new reservoir included. I can't wait to get this installed! Thanks everyone for your help!

Check Napa's and Rock Auto yourself. Each pump listed for a 2000 XJ is described as "remanufactured". None of the parts sold through Rock Auto require returning a core.
With millions of used core floating around, few manufacturers are going to spend the money casting new bodies. Most people are priced sensitive and will buy the cheap rebuilt part.
No doubt there are some good rebuilt pumps out there but it is a crap shoot. More seem to be bad than good.
The only rebuilt steering pump I would be happy with is one rebuilt by a high-performance steering gear shop. Locally that would be Lee's Power Steering, in Sun Valley, builder of steering boxes and pumps for the racing community. It's probably cheaper to buy a new PSC pump.

You're right, I did check their website again.
I'll have to agree with you about Lee Mfg, he rebuilt my early Bronco's box and pump about 25 yrs ago, cost about $500 back then but was totally worth it!
