Where to mount the spare

Mount the tire only as high as your back can handle lifting it. For me a 31X10.5 tire on the roof is no problem. Tire is realatively light which means no back pain and very little change in the XJs center of gravity. I'm running 37X12.5X17 tires, so my spare will be mounted as high as practical on the back bumper to keep a good departure angle and save my back from lifting 200# onto the roof. I'd like the beadlocks that Beezil has to eliminate a spare, but Yuppie H2 wheels are so much cheaper now.

Spare tires and lug nuts,lol. After you reach a certian age,the spare tire tends to cover the nuts. :wierd:

i built this one. it uses a bolt as a hinge and a hitch pin to lock it in the upright position. pull the pin and lay it down to acces the hatch. really simple and really strong. only thing bad is it affects your departure angle by sticking off the back. however i usually pull it off and toss the spare in the back when i hit the trails. it works fine on the roads though.

i have since sold this cherokee and am building another. but i kept my tire carrier and plan to use it on this jeep as well.

Looks pretty strange that high up and would effect your centre of gravity more as well. Seeing that your departure angle is effected by the hinge, why would you want it that high? Means you have to lift it higher and places more leverage on the hinge point when up or down for that matter as well. Blocks more of the view out the back window too!

Ok, I dont have a pick of this yet. But I run 34x10.5 LTB's. I have a 2dr and have little interior left. I used to have it flat in the back, but it took up a ton of space. I picked up some turnbuckles, eye bolts, easy links, nuts, and washers from home depot. I removed the plastic trim on the side, by the origanal spare location. I drilled a hole near the top of the panel by the bottom of the window. I installed an eye bolt, with a flat piece of metal behind it, washers, lock washers, and nut. I then cut a hole in the plastic trim to remount it. I then used the easy link to attach the turnbuckle to the eye bolt. I used turnbuckles with an eye and a hook. Then I attached the other easy link and turnbuckle to the origanal spare tire mount. Positioned the tire standing up and leaning against the C pillar, attached the hooks of the turnbuckles to the wheel's bolt holes and cranked'em down. Now the tire stands up in the original position. Driving it, I dont even notice its there and it has no effect on vision. I also have a ton of room for tools and such, and its easily removed. sorry this got out of hand...

Let see a pic or two of the mount, I run the same tires. It fits laying down, but not by much, and all the space in back is used up. I am about to fab a rear carrier, but this sounds better

well i originally had a 31 on there and i had it that high because you could see the license plate in its stock location. but its not really as high as it looks, i was squatted down when i took that pic. heres a better one showing how it sits. it follows the lines of the hatch for aesthetics. it doesnt really sit much higher than a bumper/swing away tire carier does.

has anyone tried carrying just a tire? no wheel just a tire. I've seen heavy trucks do this so why cant we? of course maybe some of us have an advantage with beadlocks and on board air. just a thought.

looks good...what did you use to actually hold the wheel/tire in place?

its a flat plate of steel with 3 splined bolts pressed in it. the bolts match the 5 on 4.5 bolt pattern. so just hold the tire up there and set it on the bolts, tighten the 3 nuts down and yer good to go.
