Wheeling in/around Big Bear Lake....?

Hi Everyone,
As you can see from my screen name, I am from out of state, but I have some business at Snow Summit Ski Resort on Thursday, and my field service person on the west coast has a YJ with SOA and 33's with open rears. We were thinking of finding some trails to run while we're out that way. We'll be going up Rt 330 to Rt 18, then to the resort. We'll only be at the resort in the morning for a few hours, and will have the rest of the day to explore. We should be fine on any type of trail up to a "higher" moderate. Can someone please fill me in on some places to go? Or, if someone lives up that way and wants to go for a trail ride Thursday afternoon, thats even better.

Thanks,
Andy in Pa. (in So Cal. for the week)

Gold Mtn would be quick and easy. John Bull can be lots of fun playing w/ different lines and on the bigger boulders. Holcomb creek is a blast. Pick any one and you will have a good time. I wish I could make it up there to show you around.

Bummer. Other than the fact that I'll be heading to the Sierras about that time.... :( You will want to head north across the lake to the Discovery center and pick up a map. They have the regular USFS maps and also a similar map but with GPS points on it as well as some trail guide books. I don't recal seeing one there but if they have a "side kick" map of the area, pick it up. they show dificulty and are far less cluttered. The people at the ski lodge will be able to tell you how to get there or even have a free local street map.
I'll pull out a map and list some #'s for the roads you may want to concider. Should be able to post them later this afternoon.

I might. Then drive up to Swamp.

Is your perception of time slipping too? What time were you planning on rolling in to camp up there?

Thanks for the info guys!! I don't think my field service rep knows the trails too well up there, and I'd like to get some maps of the trails in the area anyway.

We can't go too crazy (wish I could get my XJ out there, I'd have him stuck for sure!!) with his YJ (short wheelbase and open rears), but I am looking forward to a little CA. wheeling!

Thanks again,
Andy

I was hoping to find a Big Bear Map (the Sidekick map is on line somewhere) but to offer you folks a glimpse of future mapping try this for the Arrowhead Area (it's a large .pdf file, and worth the wait).

The Discovery Center has old (poor) USFS OHV maps, a few good commercial OHV or Mountain Bike Maps, and a few fairly good OHV trail books. Hopefully some time in the future they will have maps like the link above for BB.

(something south of BB, try this map.
