What was done to YOUR rig(XJ/MJ) today MECHANICALY????

Re: What was done to YOUR rig today MECHANICALY????

Stripped the framerails to bare metal- should save me quite a bit when I drop it at the shop for welding. That sucked... I would have waited until this weekend, but the movers are picking our stuff up tomorrow and I didn't feel like packing my drill and wheels in the Jeep.

Also put the t-case drop back in. Angle's still not perfect, but it's less severe. Was feeling some unfamiliar vibes, so we'll see how it is tomorrow.

On a little more comical note:

Was driving home today and the state 4 lane highway was shut down to one lane today for roadwork. Cruising along, pushed in the lighter to light my cigarette and the radio died. I remember that being the 1st thing that went out on me when I fried the alternator in my 1st XJ, so I commence to keeping my eyes on the voltmeter, and not the road.

Approximately 10 cars up someone got in a fender bender right around the same time this is all going on, so I'm looking at my gauge, and then worker doing his thing a little too close to the cones was making me nervous. About this time I look up to find everyone in front of me stopped. I thought to myself "well self- this XJ is done... I swerved onto the dirt shoulder, and all was well. Probably wouldn't have hit him, but man talk about some pucker factor.

Kept charge the last 2 minutes to home when I pulled the owner's manual from the glove box to see that the cig lighter and radio share a 15A fuse- which had blown...

So I also changed a fuse today.

Funny how a couple of random things happen at precisely the right time. Just glad no one was hurt- to include the Wartoad.

Be careful out there everybody.

Re: What was done to YOUR rig today MECHANICALY????

Definitely.

Movers are here today packing us up. Wish I had converted ac compressor to OBA- then I would have an excuse to keep my air tools in the jeep...

Mounted my refurbished seat brackets to passenger seat.

Re: What was done to YOUR rig today MECHANICALY????

Working on a hand throttle now. Got all the parts today at a bicycle shop for $10 ands some change.

Used a piece of old rubber hose over the shift post to match the ID of the bike lever clamp.

Mocked up the cable- it's a little long, but I have the hardware to trim the cable and crimp an end on it so it will look good without excess cable everywhere.

Poked a hole in a big firewall grommet and ran it through there.

Now I need either a cruise control "nut" from the dealership, or I might go back to the bike shop and get a threaded cable stop nut and mount it where my cc would have gone if I had the option.

Re: What was done to YOUR rig today MECHANICALY????

Yeah I read cleaning/rebuilding it vs replacing is HUGE.

I've found the little stuff is just as fun as doing the big shyte too.

Re: What was done to YOUR rig today MECHANICALY????

I drove mine (87 Wagoneer) to the Reliant Stadium Monster Rally last Sunday, does that count? My daughter, and adopted (LOL) son dragged me there.

LOL

After the rally we got to work on his jeep at the reliant parking lot, heater hose blew, LOL!!! Bypassed the heater core, took a knife, a screw driver and 5 minutes to fix it. Fun night indeed!

Finished hand throttle- works like a charm. Was freezing my tail off, so I cleaned up tools and stuff and got inside before taking pics. I'll get some tomorrow and do a write-up in mod tech.

Re: What was done to YOUR rig today MECHANICALY????

Posted hand throttle write-up in mod tech.

Pulled center console out in prep for the shop to weld in floors.

Also did some pre-road trip packing in the cargo area- fluids, spares.

Checked diff fluid in the front.

Re: What was done to YOUR rig today MECHANICALY????

On my 2000 XJ I use for camping and offroad trips I added a snorkel. I purchased one of those chinese knockoffs on ebay for $130 shipped. It installed fine I just bought better duct tubeing than came with it and used some PVC through the metal.

I had a Safari on last truck and really for $350 or so less it was a real good deal and hopefully as good. After all it will not be used all that much and will help with cleaner cooler air.

I will test it in OK and AR next month on a trip I'm attending :)

Man I want to go on one of those CO trips but just dont have the gear or the money for it right now. Be sure to post some pics to rub it in when you get back.

Re: What was done to YOUR rig today MECHANICALY????

Dropped of the heep at the shop today to get:

1. Floors cut out and replaced from front to back- NOT the cargo area.
2. HD Offroad frame stiffeners welded in.
3. Bracing added to floors where synergy spring hangers bolt to body.
4. Roof rack moved off the oem rack holes and onto JCR gutter mounts.
5. Bracing welded into light bar on rack.
6. 2 tabs welded to back of rack to replace my ghetto "bolt on" tabs.

This stuff has been bothering me for a while, be nice to not have to worry about it.

On the other hand, water pump is making MORE noise and the AC compressor clutch is making noise too as of today...

Gotta make 1000 miles to LA dammit.:gee:

Re: What was done to YOUR rig today MECHANICALY????

Changed front pads/discs. Swapped out to the OME leafs finally. Took entirely too long as I broke one of my shims in half and had to source another one.

Still need to figure out what's causing the engine to want to die when leaving intersections. Also need to source some hockey pucks and do something about those front bumpstops. And I've got a plastic cutting board I wanna dice up for lca shims. Oh the list goes on forever and the party never ends.
