What was done to YOUR rig(XJ/MJ) today MECHANICALY????

Re: What was done to YOUR rig today MECHANICALY????

well still leaking after changing out the o-rings yesterday- think it's coming from my oil pan gasket... Not gonna mess with it until next oil change since I put brand new Mobil1 in there...

Rewired my aux fan to a switch in my panel. I keep enough of an eye on temps to be able to turn it on when needed. I was tired of starting the jeep on cold mornings and not turning on the heat inside to heat the cockpit up. Not only that there were a couple of bitter mornings where I had the heat on full blast and the temp gauge didn't get any higher than 160degs- even after driving in to work.

Be good for the summer to be able to just turn it on without having to turn on the ac. I'll have the doors off and I plan on converting the ac compressor to an OBA setup.

Funny thing is I got everything wired up and flipped the switch- NOTHING... Decided to wait till to tomorrow to figure it out, so I came inside and started searching- wrong relay maybe?

Then I realized I forgot to put a fuse in the aux fuse block... All is well.

Re: What was done to YOUR rig today MECHANICALY????

Fixed the rock lights. And sold the MJ. Almost sad to see it gone.

Re: What was done to YOUR rig today MECHANICALY????

-Put some electrical conduit on the wiring for my lights underhood.

-Got started on converting my u-joint straps to u-bolts, but it got dark...

Really need to clean out my garage and get it reorganized before I start on any projects. Lots of free time has had me on a roll......

Re: What was done to YOUR rig today MECHANICALY????

Haha so I finished the u-bolt conversion on the rear axle yoke- too bad the nuts won't fit on the back. Ordered a u-bolt upgrade yoke from justdifferentials.com. Expensive lesson...

Should be starting on SYE tomorrow while I wait for yoke to show up in two days.

Re: What was done to YOUR rig today MECHANICALY????

T-Case is gutted, gonna finish it up.

Funny thing about my T-Case badge- it says "Chrysler Corporation Remanufactured Parts" on the ID tag...

Had to modify my lockring pliers with a file and basically ended up tweeking the sh!t out of the original lock ring.

Gonna finish the internals tonight so I can button it all up tomorrow.

Still waiting on u-bolt yoke which should be in tomorrow so I'll get that done too.

Dropping it off this weekend after I gut the interior to get the floors welded in and HD Offroad frame stiffeners in.

Really trying to get this bucket ready for the RoM!!!!

Re: What was done to YOUR rig today MECHANICALY????

SYE is in minus yokes and fluid. Had some responsibles today that got in the way of progress...

Re: What was done to YOUR rig today MECHANICALY????

SYE is done- moves under own power via front d-shaft. Working on the rear pinion yoke nut to upgrade to u-bolts there. Soaking in PB now.

Damned pinion nut...

Re: What was done to YOUR rig today MECHANICALY????

You might run into same issue as you did with the front. If it helps the D30 and D44 yokes I believe where the same. So if you find a good u-bolt yoke at the junk yard off an D30 it should work.

I do not think PB blaster will help the pinion nut as it is technically a lock nut. I usually if having issues with it have both tires on and have the weight of the vehicle on them. I.E. Sitting normal then use a long breaker bar and or a air gun. 99% of the time they come right off

Eventually I will swap out the front pinion for the u-bolt style.

Both tires on the ground- Tried resting a pipe wrench on a jackstand holding the pinion and using a jack on breaker bar/cheater pipe and nothing.

My impact gun isn't budging it. I just snapped my breaker bar at the socket trying to rest the cheater bar against the frame and driving it forward a bit.

Wife's picking up a torch and another breaker bar on her way home...

Re: What was done to YOUR rig today MECHANICALY????

What size/length breaker were you using? Did you try sleeving the handle with a longer piece of pipe for more strength and leverage?

Re: What was done to YOUR rig today MECHANICALY????

yeah I got a 34in steel pipe to go on the breaker bar. I got it out of my office when we got back from Afg. It's OD green so I think it is a cheater pipe from the motorpool...

Just tried to heat it with prop torch a bit and used the pipe wrench holding the pinion flange rested on a jackstand and raised the cheater pipe on the jack.

Was gonna hit it with a bfh, but the pipe wrench was on it's last tooth on the adjuster and broke it.

Maybe a bigger pipe wrench is needed...

Hate to give in after spending money on a second breaker bar, second 1 and 1/4in socket (just in case) and a torch, but I might just drop it off at the shop next week and let them hit it wiith big air.

On a good note: my SYE install was a success- drove down to Autozone earlier today on the front driveshaft and didn't have an issue.

Dorked out yesterday when I went to creep it backward to work the pinion nut and jeep wouldn't move. After about 10 minutes of "OH SH!T", I put the wife in to shift it through linkage so I could get under and watch it and looked across her lap to see I was in 2hi...:confused1

Re: What was done to YOUR rig today MECHANICALY????

While cooling off on the pinion nut I pulled and checked the width of my sway bar vs one of my spares to see if it was bent- right side swaybar link is angled inboard a bit, causing my quick release pin to walk itself out after driving.

Both RC sway bar links are adjusted to same length and the sway bar itself is not bent. The mount at the axle "looks" straight.

I scootched it over with a rubber mallet and it seems to be at a better angle now. May beat on the axle side mount a little if it continues to cause problems.

Did some more work in the way of sealing the rear wheel wells with polyurethane caulk. Missed a couple of spots on the right rear. Sh!tty thing is it says to wait a week before applying any paint. Left side is all good- just adding more coats of undercoating. Short-changed myself on the right side... Must have been in a rush.

My write-up for wiring the aux lights was added to the faq section!! Thought for sure I did some sh!t wrong in there.

Yeah at that point it's gonna be cheaper to just have the shop charge me for an hour's labor.

I'll take it in tomorrow.

I was gonna clean up the frame rails in prep for the stiffeners getting welded in, but it's kinda crappy out today.

Re: What was done to YOUR rig today MECHANICALY????

I wanted to clean up the frame rails so I can get the frame stiffeners welded in, but the driveway was wet due to some early am rain. Noot too keen on running power tools with the cords layig in water...

So I did some work gutting the interior for the floor replacement. Cut the carpet and liner underneath around the seeat and console. Can see the ground and exhaust on either side of the frame rail.

I know the driver's side is worse. I can access inside the "frame" from a hole I cut in my carpet.

When I drop it offf the floors will be replaced, stiffeners welded on, and roof rack mounts fabbed up to move the rack from the stock roof rack holes to the gutter.

It will be nice to have this taken care of.

Re: What was done to YOUR rig today MECHANICALY????

Got the rear pinion and driveshaft in.

Now to figure out the angle of the dangle for shims...

Should be dropping off next week for the floor replacements and stiffeners.

Re: What was done to YOUR rig today MECHANICALY????

The 'ol angle of the dangle....

Re: What was done to YOUR rig today MECHANICALY????

I got some procomp 4 degree shims for the price of shipping if you need 4 degree shims. I had them on my 8.25 before I built my D44 with new mounts.. Just PM me and let me know....

Re: What was done to YOUR rig today MECHANICALY????

Hey Merlin I appreciate it. I think what I'll do is just put the T-case drop back in for the trip to Louisiana.

I'll wait to measure then and I will hit you up on the shims if that's the angle I'm looking for.

I have an XJ 44 I'm gonna build so I will have the axle rotated when I get to hacking on it.

Thanks a lot though.
