What was done to YOUR rig(XJ/MJ) today MECHANICALY????

Re: What was done to YOUR rig today MECHANICALY????

Here's the link to wiring write-up in mod tech:

http://naxja.org/forum/showthread.php?t=1077606

-Moved 102" whip mount outboard on rear bumper- trying to keep it from hitting left side rear aux light housing- gonna have to move lights inboard a bit...

Made a little retainer clip out of an odd bracket in the junk hardware box. Tied it to roof rack to hold 102" antenna down along roof-line if needed.

-Sealed rear wheel well cut and fold with polyurethane roofing caulk from lowes.

-Undercoated rear quarter cut and fold.

After the amount of money I spent wiring up my lighs and junk the Wife has me on spending hold until next payday: water pump, heater motor and getting roof rack mounts welded to get the rack off the oem rack holes and onto the gutters. Every time I hit a bump the roof "gongs". Rather disconcerting thoughts go through my head in a rollover...

The scoop scares the Fast and Bi-Curious kids at stop lights!!

Actually it was my answer to venting heat. I didn't want to mess with trying to cut out specifically shaped holes for vents that someone was gonna overcharge me for.

-Scoop- $30
-4in rubber trailer grommet- 98 cents (had to buy 3 though!)
-4in hole saw- $40

Yeah the hole saw cost more than the actual setup, but now I can cut as many 4 inch holes in my jeep as I want!!! :laugh2:

Re: What was done to YOUR rig today MECHANICALY????

Replaced the radiator on the 89....

Re: What was done to YOUR rig today MECHANICALY????

I been installing my Lift in my jeep for the past 2 days.. still not finished...

This is what my jeep looked like before the partial lift install

I stripped the heads on both upper control arm bolt. and I had to use a grinder with a cut off wheel. well it was all going well until I cut into my fuel line the hard plastic one.. Now I have to get a rubber line to repair it : ( not liking it but it will do.

Tomorrow I gonna fix the fuel line and get the arms bolted up to the axle and install the springs and I should be back on its wheels.

I kinda figured it was to vent heat, but was also wondering if you were running a trans cooler under it instead. Definitely would get the ricer crowd in a frenzy, lol. And I know what ya mean about the hole saw. About to buy a 3in one for my cowl "snorkel" and trying to figure out what other holes I can do that would be useful. So far, none.

Re: What was done to YOUR rig today MECHANICALY????

that's the only other hole I could think of- are you building your own cowl snorkel??

Re: What was done to YOUR rig today MECHANICALY????

Yep. I already have the extra air tube, just need the two 90 degree bends and a short piece of straight pipe, all in 3in pcv. Oh, and buy the hole saw. Punch a hole about above the brake booster and connet the pieces. May tackle this next along with swapping the muffler. Really haven't decided what to do about the heat issue. What I may do is get 2 scoops like on the Superbees, punch a couple of 3in holes in the hood then put the scoops over them. Also been toying with putting a trans cooler on the hood, with or without a fan, and doing the 1151 Iraq special scoop. But that seems it would be putting more heat into the engine bay, unless I put some vents in the back corners of the hood. As far as what other uses a hole saw could be of, i dunno. If you haven't put drain plugs in your jeep, if you could find some 4in stoppers or something, just a thought.

What did I do related to the rig this weekend...picked up my free set of 30x9.5in Mud Rovers, have alot of life left on them, my buddy only had them on for about 4-5,000 miles. Hoping to have them mounted here soon.

I think I still have a TJ airtube I pulled from a JY when I was thinking of building a cowl snorkel. I might have given it to my buddy before I moved here though. Have to dig around...

I got my scoop from here:

http://www.racecomposites.com/squarebolt.htm

My other option from the same company was this one:

http://www.racecomposites.com/mini2bolt.htm

I went with the "square" since it had a smaller footprint on the hood, but it does stand .25 in higher.

I'm sure if you dug around on there you could find something that could work for you.

Re: What was done to YOUR rig today MECHANICALY????

No prob.

-Put my front sway bar back in and installed the RC quick discos that came with my lift.

-Mounted ANL fuse holder in anticipation of upgrading alternator cable to 1awg.

Re: What was done to YOUR rig today MECHANICALY????

Adjusted my power steering pulley in the hopes that it stops the pulley noise from up front. Stripped out my power steering bracket in the process. Yay!

Re: What was done to YOUR rig today MECHANICALY????

-Re-attached the rod to the actuator on the front passenger door so people can get out.

-Re-routed rear seatbelt out from under my cargo net (dorked out when I installed it...).

-Continued to seal/undercoat my quarter panel cut and fold in the rear.

-Tried to mount my 31" TSL in the stock spare location- didn't work out for me but apparently it is possible. Think this might be achieved with a diff tire...?

It's possible but you have to modify the rear seat a little. There was a write up on this a long time ago. If it hasn't been purged you should be able to find it.

I've got a new 31" BFG A/T mounted in mine. Fits but is very tight. No mods.

Re: What was done to YOUR rig today MECHANICALY????

Yeah no sweat- once I get the roof rack off of the stock rack holes in the roof and on to the gutters I can put the spare up there- it's only a 31.

Right now I have it in this position:

DSC04006.jpg

The main interference I had was with the soundbar- I was banging it off the speaker... No issues with the seat. I'll keep it where it's at until I can get it up on the rack- then I could use the rack for something other than holding my lights up!!

Today I did more sealing with the PL roofing caulk- mainly in the seam between the inner and outer rear wheel wells and the corners of the poly performance spring hangers.

Got a quote today on replacing floorboards front to rear for $950- less if I do a bunch of prep work meself.

My spare hits the speaker too but aint that what the speaker cover is for? ;)
Besides that....
the spare helps hold up the only spot my headliner aint sagging.
Dual purpose... spare tire/headliner holder-upper. LOL!!

Re: What was done to YOUR rig today MECHANICALY????

Yeah I ditched my headliner. Now the sounds from "custom" dents in my roof rattling and gonging off the crossmembers is considerably louder...:anon:

Re: What was done to YOUR rig today MECHANICALY????

Finished the T-stat, radiator replacement on the 89, after it overheated new years morning and got a hole near an upper weld on the plastic tank near the inlet nipple (stress point I guess, after 2 years, it gave out?). The 185 F Israeli T-stat I got at O'Rileys seems to be working fine. The AZ radiator hoses are now crap, they use to real good. I used O'Riley Gates hoses this time, but even they were substandard to the ones I bought at AZ just years ago. Go figure.

New 3 row CFS all copper/brass radiator, new hoses. Started right up and runs fine, no apparent damage to the engine. One odd note, the Temp sensor on the read if the head was damaged some how. No leak, but it seperated on the top half into two parts, where the connector clips on. Real odd! I finally got my hands on a real sensor, the one that broke was a temp switch for an idiot light (AZ sold me the wrong one last year).

I ran the engine for 30 minutes, with heater on, the coolant T-Stat area ran 185-195, idle to 3000 rpm, and the radiator exit never got over about 170 F at 3000 rpm. At idle the radiator exit was running about 145 F. I still have about 1" of air in the upper radiator (Renix) and upper hose, that I suspect slows coolant flow, like a vapor lock of sorts. I bought an inline hose filler cap part from Jegs for this rig a year ago, but can't find the damn thing now, LOL.

Re: What was done to YOUR rig today MECHANICALY????

Replaced oil filter adapter o-rings (all 3) and swapped to mobile 1 synthetic with a wix filter.

The adapter job took maybe an hour. I spent more time degreasing the adapter and bolt than actually installing it all- thanks to all those who came before me on NAXJA.

In unrelated news spoke seriously with two guys on converting- one from TJ to XJ due to familial growth and the other was a Yota guy thinking of a 4runner vs XJ...

May post it in the BS thread- stay tuned...
