What was done to YOUR rig(XJ/MJ) today MECHANICALY????

Re: What was done to YOUR rig today?

One of the runners from the block is cracked almost 360 degrees around the weld...

I know that pain...on my DD.... X2 runners, all I did was tap it with my hand when I got the manifold off too.. lol

Re: What was done to YOUR rig today?

FWIU...the problem is not the welds. The problem is the factory manifolds have no way to expand/contract with the heat along the horizontal tubes without adding stress to the tubes. The expansion adds up from center out, this is why you always see the crack at the tubes at the end of the manifold, or at the Y before the exhaust pipe. The aftermarket manifolds use a bellows (expansion joint) on the #1 and #6 cylinders to allow for the expansion and reduce stress on the tubes.

like this:

Aftermarket headers don't need the bellows because the tubes are not connected by a long horizontal tube, so the tubes are all expanding in the same direction plus the expansion does not add up as you get farther from center.

Re: What was done to YOUR rig today?

My wife's XJ had a heddman header on it and when I pulled it off it had so many cracks I could have used it as a sifter! It had been rewelded to fix cracks once before in it's lifetime (horrible job of it too) So not all aftermarket headers are created equal. My stock manifold is still good and its original. Guess I got lucky.

Anyway, since this is what I did today thread, i tightened down a control arm bolt on the axle this morning before work. Helped the clunking some but I think it needs more tightening.

Re: What was done to YOUR rig today?

Agreed...all headers are not created equal. Headers are not impervious to cracking either. Anytime you have metal expanding and contracting due to heat there is potential for cracking like we see on the manifolds.

Will have to do mine sometime soon. Mine is cracked around the Y where it meets the exhaust pipe. The dangling exhaust system left by the previous owner probably didn't help.

You may have just jinxed yourself...:D

Re: What was done to YOUR rig today?

this one dont have the expansion joints. but only got it for 50 shipped and its brand new even came with gasket. so im not goin to complain to much ill run it til i can get somethin better. mines broke in a few places so i need to replace it.

Re: What was done to YOUR rig today?

hey i can finally post something about "the rig" something is all jacked up from me not driving it so it pulled really really hard to the right under braking.... im temped to slam on the brakes and fix the whole problem :D

Re: What was done to YOUR rig today?

I got my front d44 installed and then realized that my front drive shaft has to be shortened. So tomorrow pulling the front shaft and taking 2 inches out of it. Then I'll be ready for a trial run.

Re: What was done to YOUR rig today?

Put a new crankshaft position sensor in and got her running, then put in a thermostat and antifreeze to take care of the cooling issue.

also got my tire carrier hinge in the mail.

Re: What was done to YOUR rig today?

Reinstalled my stock fan clutch last night in attempt to fix my over cooling problem. The Grand Cherokee fan clutch was doing too good a job. Hopefully my gas mileage goes back up.

So, specs on that 30? :D

Re: What was done to YOUR rig today?

The 30 I took out has an Aussie locker, Solid Diff Cover, stock shafts with big joints (tack welded caps), somewhat of a "truss", and I think that is it.

Re: What was done to YOUR rig today?

Oh hell, that's pretty much just like mine cept with a truss.

Re: What was done to YOUR rig today?

LOL yeah.... As soon as I round up an 8.8 for the rear, I got a brand new XJer that lives near me, and he said he would buy my front and rear for his rig. I just gotta find that 8.8 I been looking for. LOL

Re: What was done to YOUR rig today?

Niiiiicceeee

Re: What was done to YOUR rig today?

Is it what you need, as in a 4.10 open?

I guess I don't need to look for one now.

You wanna wait til my write up to do yours? I have taken alot of pictures.

Re: What was done to YOUR rig today?

Well it is 4.10's but it is LSD. I have an open carrier for one, that I got from a buddy for free though. Also I already got the flange adapter to use my cherokee drive shaft with it. I also already have a set of spring perches. I may end up starting the install this weekend. Depends on if I can scrounge up the money for a new set of rotors and pads for it. I will probably just wheel it with the LSD for a few months until I can afford to buy the mini spool.

Re: What was done to YOUR rig today?
