What was done to YOUR rig(XJ/MJ) today MECHANICALY????

I finally got smart and used a garden hose to find the last window gasket leak on my 87 Wagoneer :laugh3:

Guessing sucks.

Saturn ball joints and struts are all done, all new on the 270,000 mile beast, turn signals on both vehicles done and working, pulled the Saturn power sterring pump, waiting on the replacement.....on its way, . I need someone to score me a good JY Saturn SL1 rim (2001, but they should all be the same). Started to tear into the Taurus Ford to get at the vertical transmission cover to access the valve body. Going to open her up and change the fluid pressure control solenoid for starters. Wish me luck, its a FORD.

Just needs tires and alignment on the 89, 2wd.

Cruiser54 made me a custom Renix gas tank flange removal tool. It is on its way from California (loaner-trial) :-) to solve the pump replacement access problem on the 89 4WD rig I have yet to get on the road. If it works, he might consider making a batch of them?

85 Diesel needs a shop near me to swap the manual Trans pressure plate, clutch and bearing.. Need to shop for one

Yep harley edition is about leaving oil on the pavement, it could be a cool direction for a build though. I am in McKinney, hopefully in a few months time it will be ready for some trails. Fixed the e brake last night, and started a plan of attack for the new found battery drain issue, and the leak in the dash...glad it isnt the heater core...

Started work on the AX4N ford transmission today. Hope to get it working again with a new fluid pressure control valve-solenoid.

Am I the only one doing anything to my rigs here? LOL

Just ordered 2 of these (will modify them)

I just ordered two of them for my Wagoneer. I am planning (I think) to do this

Just ordered the super cheap H7 bulbs delivered from China for under $1 each off Ebay . Total cost under $30 if this works.

The 4701 and 4703 bulb is getting harder to find and very pricy >$17 ea). I just ordered 4 at about 1/2 price online before they are gone.

I will build the adapter-mods myself.

Also got all the engine mount and sub frame crap out of the way
(What a royal PAIN, God I love old Jeeps)
on the Ford Taurus and am now ready to pull the side mounted transmission cover to the valve body and replace the EPC control valve (scored a $150 new one in the Ebay NOS for $17 delivered :-) Make My Day Ebay!!)

Which I hope will save the Ford, yet once again from the junk yard. 1996, and must have well over 250,000 miles on it, maybe 300,000. ODO died 8 years ago at 197,000. Engine runs like it is brand new.

Learned how much crap a power steering pump inline suction side filter can accumulate on the Ford. It was factory OEM. I am now putting them on all power steering repair jobs, jeeps and the Saturn.

R6 Thanks for the heads up I sent a request.

Econmike, looks like a cool mod for sure. I plan on a headlight mod myself just not sure what yet. Of course it is way down the list. Brakes, oil leak, electrical drain, and water leaking into the cab first....will hit that last item tonight i hope. If I can get two of the others done this week I will be a happy camper!

After 40 years of wrenching I recently discovered the art of using a garden hose on a dry day, dry jeep to quickly find the real source of water leaks :-)

For me, the head light Mod is because I am sick and tired of replacing impossible to reach head light switches that were never designed (at least today's switches) for the normal loads. With 5 Jeeps here to maintain its a real pain. I did the other two main DD jeeps 3-4 years ago, but the Wagoneer-87-XJ has rare old headlights (4701 and 4703) that are very expensive and hard to find now, and no one has a ready to use harness for them. So I moving the load from the headlight switch to the relays in the harness and routing power directly to the headlights, and not through the firewall and HL switch. While researching it I found the cool mode that will let me reuse the old bulbs and mount H-4 bulbs in the old glass fixtures.

Now if I can just find a heavy duty clear coat plastic-rubber coating for the glass to keep the glass from cracking when attacked by road rocks :-) I can keep them sealed.

Rock guards?

Check ebay... just wite guard that snaps over headlights

I did, found nothing... I doubt they exist for the Wagoneer 4701 4703 small square head lights I would consider them for.
Also not sure the ones I saw would work for me in the small city highway, where high speed mini-mini pebbles predominate, that I suspect do the most damage here.

Off road, behind another jeep on gravel roads throwing rocks at you they should be awesome.:sunshine:

Finally got the side cover off the Ford Transmission and removed a lot of arm skin fighting the sharp edged battery tray deathstar that is welded to the body and in the way.

Did I say I hate Fords?

Got just got the new gasket in, old one was not reusable. So it is ready to go back together. The new EPS pressure control valve is already installed. Fingers crossed this fixes the beast.

Received the replacement used JY power steering pump off Ebay to replace the one UPS trashed in shipment (the shipper did a real PP job of packing it, especially when using UPS). Might as well of have dropped it off a 100 ft bridge.

So both the saturn and the ford should get those parts reinstalled tomorrow if the sun shines, etc. Decided not to use an inline magnetic/mechanical filter on the return line hoses on either. Was seriously thinking about it but could not find any that I trusted the quality on.

Next is front end alignments and tires on the 89 Jeep and the Saturn and road tests on the ford.

Got the 89 2wd front end alignment (toe in) done today. Now for two new tires and fix the AC before it gets any hotter.

Got the Ford Transmission side pan reinstalled. Now to reassemble all the the other junk we had to pull to reach it.

Got the Saturn PW pump pulled...ran out of time.

May get rain tonight and tomorrow :(

Decided to pass on adding inline filters on the transmission and power steering hoses. Did not like the plastic made in China issues I kept seeing, and had concerns about starving and blocking flows.

Well it has begun...time to save this XJ. I picked it up on the cheap so it needs a lot of love...The battery drain gremlin left, I don't know how but it did...it is a strong possibility that the overly tall battery was contacting the hood enough to cause the issue. Driver side leak found and repaired I have the passenger side narrowed down and will get on it this weekend. Picked up oilpan gasket and rear mainseal along with the brakes which are already done, pads could have been reused but the rotors were warped big time. Also dropped the front diff cover and drained it, nice clean oil...suprising for sure.

The funny thing is as worn as the bushings and all are this jeep has very little rust, nice to be a city jeep for sure. Tomorrow I will drop the oilpan and see what gives on the lower end, grabbed some plastigage and figure I will check the bearings while I am there. It was supposedly rebuilt 9 months ago, but I suspect it is just a junkyard engine swap, hence the rear main, valve cover, and oil filter adapter leak. We will see tomorrow.

Funny thing is moving all my bowmaking stuff around was more work than the jeep so far. Oh well the garage needed a cleaning!

Well folks I finally started buying up the odds and ends tonight for a complete Snap-On tools brick, the MT-2500 with all the hardware, cartridges, keys and cables..and manuals and so on for testing Renix jeeps, 87-90 and other rigs up to at least 1998 so far. They are not as easy to find as in 2009 when I last looked. Here is my latest buy :-)

Cartridge? What does those do?

Wow what a PITA that top half of the seal just won't move worth a crap! Guess I will go pick up a real punch and try again. Bearings look better than I expected guess plastigage will tell the tale. The oil pan is bent to crap and has a small pin hole, had to straighten the sealing surface in more than one spot, no wonder it is coated in oil. That and the rear main, ugh. Gotta go eat with the family now so maybe get it done tonight.

Think of the cartridges as specialty software packages, year by year up dates and some are basic like OBD-II, some are by car manufacturer, some are real specialty like Transmission only diagnostics (I just scored one of those bad boys on Ebay :-) ) :D and ABS brakes only and body diagnostics on the new fancy garbage.....The basic scanner is useless with out the cartridges and visa verso. The new cartridges made the old scanner reusable each year. The MT-2500 is no longer supported by Snap-on, so as the big shops upgrade to new scanners and stop working on old junk like mine, LOL, these old $2000 rigs get dumped on Ebay.... for $100 to $200...

Think of the scanner as a bare laptop and then Windows office as the cartridge....etc

mine is so close to running and driving. i actually moved it this weekend so i could get my GTO out of the garage.

castor is set, track bar is set, went through and tightened everything in the front.

put the rear shocks on, tightened the rear suspension down.

only thing left to do is the extended brake lines, trim the fenders, and trans cooler and she will be ready to ride. brake lines might end up being tricky since the fronts were siezed into the soft line but i have a couple things im going to try before i cut/reflare the hardlines.

this little amount of flex had it into the fenders already haha. definitely have some cutting in my future.
