Back in 2003, I was on financial skids. I was living at home after a failed apartment venture with an old friend (never do that). My Bronco's exhaust valve had failed and I was running over 70 miles per day on my Mother's Taurus while waiting on the replacement part. A family friend needed some cabinets built for his daughter, and had a red/silver 89 XJ Country (originally a Laredo, but it was badged as a Country when I got it) to trade. It was a gem on arrival, sporting 189,000 miles, a 4.0L HO engine, the AW4 trans, NP242 TCase, leather seats, alloy wheels, CD changer, car phone, and a sunroof (that wound up sucking). The trade was made in September of 2003. I was the only one to ever drive it.
After the first night of driving it, the transmission (AW4) refused to recognize 1st gear anymore. I parked it the next morning, and the family friend had it trucked away to be fixed. It came back in Early November, and I drove it until the middle of the month, when the transmission failed again. He had it trucked out once again and fixed. I got the thing back in March 2004. In April 2004, a drunk 16-year-old girl ran a stop sign and took my back bumper, corner sheet metal, and passenger tail light with her as she ran home. After that, it had some minor engine and vibration issues until the motor mounts broke in August of 2004. After replacing those, the truck ceased to fail catastrophically on a regular basis, so I began upfitting it for my hobby (storm chasing/storm spotting/volunteer public safety). Some of these moves included deleting the crappy aftermarket sunroof, lifting it 2", getting 31" tires, and installing equipment like radios, weather stations, and a lightbar.
My mother gave it to me this month, when guess what failed again (the crappy AW4!!!). I have purchased another AW4 with 160K miles on it, and will be bolting it in next Monday. I am slowly working all of the kinks out of it, and have bigger future plans for it. I plan on equipping it with a snorkel, raised vent and exhaust, a 4" lift, H4 modular headlights, KC Off-Road Lights, a winch and winch bumper, and Dana 44 axles with 3.55 gears, 4 wheel discs, and ARB air lockers.
So far, the clock is at 213,000 and shows no signs of stopping!!!
