what should my rpm's be?

howdy y'all- new here from that 'other' forum...no luck on any answers there-
ok- 96 XJ sport 4wd, 4.0 aw4 auto tranny, stock 3:55 gears, 215/75/15 stock size tires on 7x9 stock sport rims- at 70 mph I am turning 2500 rpm's. From what I've gathered from most others, this is about 700 or so more than the norm at that speed. Torque converter does seem to be engaging- I get three shifts, then a fourth, and then a slight fifth from the TC. I tried slightly applying brake at that speed, rpm's 'jump' up a bit as the TC disengages from the brake application.
What else could it be? -Or are there others who are running this high?

that sounds about right for 215's, Mine runs 2500rpm at 80mph on 30's

Well I have a 95 and I am turning about 2150 rpm at 75 on 235s so i think you could have a problem.....Sorry no help

At 70mph, your engine should be at 3000rpm in 3rd and 2250rpm in 4th. You're slightly higher than that so it looks like the TC isn't locking up fully. If the rpm jump when you apply very light throttle at that speed, that's a sure sign of a slipping TC.

sorry to jack the thread, but how about on decel, the rpm's drop to idle and then from there jump about 300 rpm's. I have a crazy noise when in drive around 35-40mph that sounds like a manual transmission trying to move from a stop in 3rd gear. My flex plate isn't cracked and no loose bolts, so could this be the same problem as mentioned above, a slipping TC?
