what rear axle did 87 xj 4x2 come with?

i found one in a junk yard. positive its a 44 . but why such a beefy axle in a 2 wheel drive jeep.

2 wheel drives can tow things too...

a lot of D44's came with the towing package

I just bought an 87 4x4, how can you tell if it's a 44- sorry, kinda new. I cant tell the difference between 35 and 44

the pumpkin on the 44 is almost like a hexigon, the 35 is small oval, and chy. 8.25 is a big circle and the dif cover has a small lip around it. the 35 has no lip and neither does the44

dana axles have there model number (30,35,44,60, etc) casted right into the center section by the dif cover. look for it and youll know what you got

I have a question? Is that the dana 44? I have the same axle in my xj and I thought it was a d-35? Sorry just curios what i got thanks

This is a D44. A d35 is very round.
