What do you guys recommend for a head unit?

I'm really not seeing any difference in head units, they all have the same harmonic distortion, the ones with frequencies listed are all the same, so what do you guys recommend? I can spend $150-$200, and I can go up a little if it's amazing.

Remember that any THD (total harmonic distortion) under 1% is not detectable by the human ear. As long as they aren't advertising more than that, you've got nothing to worry about.

I'm happy with my cheapie Pioneer, its plenty of power and clarity with good speakers and I have a sub and amp for the bass. Plus its cheap so I'm not worried about theft...

Thanks, I'm probably going to go with Alpine then, it has some pretty nice features. the Cardomain Store is telling me that I'm going to need an adapter for every single head unit... XJ's are 1 DIN, right?

XJ's are like a DIN and a 1/3rd.. lol

But yeah, you'll need a pigtail for every headunit out there... And headunits are really personal preference...

+1 on the Pioneer. I have a few friends who have Alpines and i think they are crap. the knobs and buttons get all loose on them rather quickly. My Pioneer from Walmart is great.

I've been out of the audio scene for a few years, but I used to swear by Alpine... their stuff that I've looked at recently doesnt look half as nice (or as durable) as they did a few years ago

I'm in the JVC headunit crowd right now.. But some of their new stuff isnt looking up to par..

One of my main criteria is bluetooth, JVC and Pioneer both make bluetooth head units with bluetooth built in not an add on. I keep getting these zingers every month, seems everytime I get a few bucks saved up SOMETHING comes along and drains the toy account.
I like this one, it has a detachable microphone

This one also has good reviews

The sony ones have bad reviews from the users.

I played around with a Sony unit that had bluetooth built in from Parts Plus, and I could control the music off of my phone and all and receive calls... It was awesome..
But I wouldnt ever buy a sony product.. I traded an old piece of junk mp3 128mb player for a 1200w Sony Xplod amp (the guy was dumb)... But the amp is junk cause sony advertises peak, not rms, but it was still practically free and I still use it.

The headunit I have is a JVC, and like I said I'm in the JVC crowd now, just cause I have Sirius too, and it's a JVC product that runs via the JVC-cables.
I've got the JVC KD-LH910, it's a 2005 model and bluetooth wasnt that common then... But the headunit rocks, I love it, just wish I had bluetooth.

Alpine head unit all the way. Most dealers carry a 2 year warranty. and as far as all the rest of the audio, im proud to say that while being a part of Team Music Master greenwood SC we held the world SPL record in our class. Only 6 db shy of the world record in any class... Did it all with Memphis!

x3 on the alpine, ive got the cda-9831. bought it back in the day for 300 but you could probably get one now for a really good price

Alpine is great, but right now Im rocking a panasonic that is pretty decent. Figure out what you want from your headunit and go from there. I wanted one that played MP3s and WMAs and had an aux line in, so I settle on the one I have.

ya i would say the alpine is just about your best bet.... however there are many other good companys too... eclipse has improved alot over the past few yrs.. kenwood has some good stuff out there...

pioneer lost alota buisness when walmart started sellin there stuff....

but if ya goin after a budget build them ya pioneer is the way to go...

but when i replace my head unit im goin with another alpine!!!
or if i can find a good deal on a clarion they make some high quality stuff too...

I recommend open headers. The sweet sweet music of the engine is all a real man needs.

did I have you going?

Hahahah, yeah! I agree, open headers is the best music... LOL

I'm all about Eclipse. I have been using theur h/u for the past 5 years now and I love them. They always work for me and never have any problems as long as you know how to secure it to your dash. Sound is amazing (IMO) compaired to Pioneer, JVC, Keenwood, Alpine, etc. with their high end units, you can get a 8v pre-out for your amps and have some killer woofer sounds.
